Hi ladies

Very long story but DP has been struggling with depression and alcohol abuse for several years but has been out of work for an unrelated reason for the last 6 months and it has spiralled completely out of control. He is now drinking during the day, which he never has before and crying several times a day.

On the plus side, he has finally admitted the extent of his problems and sought help in the form of counselling and medication for his depression and alcohol support for his addiction. I am really proud of how far he has come and he is doing a lot better mentally now, but the physical addiction has become so severe that the alcohol support worker has said he needs a detox. This was promised over 3 months ago but never set in motion. DP is very keen to start but keeps being given different reasons why it can't start, including administrative changes, his missing a meeting (which was unfortunate, but an isolated incident for which he apologised), his not cutting doen enough on his own, his cutting down so mich that he is no longer drinking enough to justify it and various others. This is all true as I have attended the meetings.

He is very committed but struggling to do the gradual reduction as drinking a small amount leads to strong urges to drink more. He finds it much easier to abstain completely, but without detox medication, he has been experiencing severe side effects including seizures with this method. This has resulted in several A&E admissions.

We are really frustrated and considering alternatives. We really can't afford private rehab but on the other hand, things can't carry on like this. Does anyone have any suggestions, practical advice or stories to share? Many thanks.

Also, has anyone had any experience of private rehab? How effective was it? What were the costs? Thanks in advance.

Just bumping this. Any information about private rehab would be really useful.

Can I bump this too? Need to help a friend and am a bit lost.

I've been to private rehab. I went in for 4 weeks in the summer of 2014. Haven't touched a single drop for 5 years this year. Before I went there and indeed even in the first week or so I struggled to even comprehend how I would live a life with no drink. But here I am, having a better life than I have ever had. Loving not drinking and never once looked back. I love my new life. The only thing I have to say is it will only work it it what you really want. I met other people in rehab there because they were pleasing other people but you have to want it. Unfortunately 4 of the people I knew in rehab have died. That's the thing if you don't change it will only end one way. Good luck in what you choose, but if you, your friend, husband get a change at rehab grab it with both hands. It's a game changer. Xx

Thank you for responding. I have been looking into options and hopefully my friend will be on the way to rehab soon.

I completed 28 days private rehab 6 months ago and haven't had a drink since. I think you need to do some research because facilities vary widely in the 'rules' they impose, personally I found no access to internet, phones etc helpful but I know that some centres have tv and wifi etc in bedrooms.

Costs vary considerably but about £10 000 for 4 weeks seems pretty standard.

It is absolutely essential that you really want it, it's not easy. I saw a lot of people who were back for the second or third time because they had not fully committed the first time. Having said that, I don't think I would ever have stopped without rehab so to me it was money well spent.
