Moderate drinkers support thread?

schooladviceplease2015 · 04/04/2015 18:49

I started another thread about cutting down wine - I'm on a large glass per night. This is a third of a bottle, sometimes more on 'blow out nights'. Never more than bottle though.

I haven't had a drink since last Sat night. At first I felt no benefit, but now I'm feeling brighter, healthier (even though I haven't changed my diet), more rested and relaxed, looking less puffy and less held together by thick make up.

Is there anyone who'll join me on my mission to save drinking for outside the home? So it becomes a treat rather than a daily habit?

I'm battling cravings now so have fired up the kettle (again).

I want to become healthier but by bit and once I've conquered this I am going to introduce more changes. Brew

Hiya I'm more of a heavy drinker about 12 units a day, that's a bottle and can of beer and I hate it,I failed miserably yesterday but I'm not giving in today Is the first Friday in a long time I will be not drinking, I've put all temptation out as in gone down the drain. My family know what I'm doing and they have been lovely. I personally want to stop completely, due to family history of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, I feel it best I quit.

How are you getting on,always here to Chat x

Haggisfish · 10/04/2015 08:09

I will join! I probably average a third to two thirds of a bottle of wine which is too much for me-not sure what my target is at the moment. I think I might try only having my first drink after dinner and having at least two dry nights a week. Start off slow!

Haggisfish · 10/04/2015 08:10

A non alcoholic drink I have enjoyed recently is a quarter of lime and two big slices of cucumber in a Ping of water-I love the slightly coconutty taste from the lime.

Haggisfish · 10/04/2015 08:11

That should be pint, not ping, obviously!

rainbow86 · 10/04/2015 08:23

Will try that ??,it's about support knowing you're not alone with it all, life gets a little difficult at times and this is one of the obstacles I want to overcome, yes cutting down is a great start otherwise you end up with your body crying out for the chemical, I probably aren't doing it the best way, I cut it out completely for a couple of days but give in to the craving, good luck guys and always here for a chat xxx

rainbow86 · 10/04/2015 08:24

The question marks were a smiley face x

Cappster · 10/04/2015 13:55

Yes. Yes please. I can drink one or two large glasses of wine a night easily; or three or four single whiskies.

I signed up to one of those Change4Life things about not drinking at home - it suggested all kinds of things I could do instead, such as taking long baths or working from home or going for a long walk. My children take so much putting to bed that I have about half an hour at 10.30pm for 'me'. Throwing wine at it has become the only thing I'm good for. I certainly couldn't start anything WORTHWHILE. The only thing I seem to have time to do is drink.

schooladviceplease2015 · 12/04/2015 14:02

How is everyone going?

I had a work night out on Fri, so enjoyed myself - about four drinks I'd say.

But despite being away last night and out to lunch today I've not touched another drop! Despite DH buying me a bottle for the caravan and a day trawling around soft plays Grin

I am putting on weight though, as I think I'm compensating. I've just seen a God awful picture of myself out on Friday night. Bloody hell - it's really depressed me.

So now I feel ready, after cutting myself some slack due to giving up booze in the house to up my game re. Diet.

Ahem. Not so well. Not dreadfully but not great. Managed one dry night since I posted but have been moderate in my consumption. Managed two nights no drinking with dinner which did help with overall consumption. Will keep trying-back to work next week so hoping it will be easier.

rainbow86 · 13/04/2015 09:19

Hiya hope everyone is well today, it's nice to know there's support and people reading our posts, you're all doing really well, it's definitely a difficult cycle to break. I am on day four no alcohol and last night was awful I nearly ran up the shop but managed to stay home. I only am doing it this way as I say the fear of alcoholism due to family history is great. it's a lovely sunny day, hubby and kids of school and work and this is where I really want alcohol this afternoon but have promised a friend I'll go the gym later tonight, have a lovely day xxx

Haggisfish · 13/04/2015 09:25

Well done you-that's a great achievement!

Bowlersarm · 13/04/2015 09:27

I'm in. Dh and I have been doing ok this year until the last few weeks when we've barely had an alcohol free evening. I blame the kids being on school holidays Smile. Feeling a bit jaded now though which I'm sure is mainly due to the increasing wine consumption.

This week I'm going to start - unbelievable for me - couch to 5k, in the hope it keeps me motivated and gives me something to do in the evenings rather than reach for the wine bottle.

Good thread for me, because I'm not interested in stopping but need to moderate more and cut down.

rainbow86 · 14/04/2015 08:59

Thanks Haggisfish and I thought I could do moderate Sad turns out not, I thought 3 full days clear and I could have a couple, goodness knows how much I drank, I just know I woke up in bed, with an annoyed hubby, me throwing up, smashing headache now feeling like a failure. Boys were at their grans so all ok there. But I am going carry on,will keep popping in checking how everyone is getting on but think I best start a thread for complete abstinence, thanks everyone x

rainbow86 · 14/04/2015 08:59

Carry on the journey to complete abstinence x

schooladviceplease2015 · 14/04/2015 11:10

Aww rainbow! Keep us updated. Maybe abstinence and then onto this thread a bit later? I'm not sure if that's how it works?

I started battling the glass of wine craving yesterday afty but it really was only temporary.

I have found what really helps me is to concentrate on that lovely fresh and bright feeling the morning after you don't drink and also the awful, jaded held-together by make-up feeling - and then re-evaluate the craving.

I also try and then do something like boil the kettle or lie down with a book and a candle as a 'treat'.

It's been almost two weeks now of not drinking in the house and I feel so much better.

And because I'm managing it it's making me wonder what else I can manage - so now I'm starting to try and cut down on food and increase fruit and veg.

How is everybody else doing?

OP posts:
Haggisfish · 14/04/2015 17:57

That's why I'm no good at complete abstinence-I just end up doing a massive bender. I stuck to my plan last night-no wine with dinner which meant I only had my first (and only!) drink after nine. I bought a 25ml measure so had my coffee vodka and water and it just did nicely. Only one unit! Keep plugging away at it-I stopped smoking years ago and realised there was no point self flagellating if I messed up once-just try and get back on track.

schooladviceplease2015 · 16/04/2015 11:50

How's it going kids?

007JamesBond · 16/04/2015 11:55

Can I join in? I prob drink about 3 bottles of wine in a week and could do with cutting down to half of that at least. I only ever drink small glasses but don't know how many of them I drink!

Bowlersarm · 16/04/2015 12:09

Hmm, not going so well for me this week. Had wedding anniversary, and a friends birthday. Won't have anything tonight. We are busy over the weekend but my strategy is to drive, so I'll have a small glass of wine fri and sat nights. Probably have some with Dh on Sunday. Next week I will knuckle down, especially as I'm enjoying the start of my exercise regime. Long may it continue.

It's great to wake up with a clear head isn't it school.

schooladviceplease2015 · 16/04/2015 13:15

Yes it is lovely.

I feel bright :-)

My next sesh so to speak is Fri night out with friends and DH - and it will be well deserved.

The no drinking in the house thing is really working for me. I NEVER thought I'd be able to do it.

I'm in too!!! Need to cut back, and I really enjoy my wine, but the weight is going on, my mum is an alcoholic, and I really fear that!!!
