Confused about IA

My friend and her husband are looking into International Adoption, but need to choose their country. She and her husband have a couple of ideas and emailed me, but I have heard various things slightly different to their information. Could any of you adoption guru's advise?

They have looked on a uk website quoting a current 2.5-3 year wait once papers are logged in in China, whereas an American friend told me that it will take at least 4 years, possibly as much as 8, becasue China are backlogged with applications, and numbers of abandoned infants are going down. Is she right? I don't want to scare friend with nightmare rumours that aren't true!

She also said Russia could be a nightmare of paperwork and birth relatives could turn up any time before the court hearing and reclaim custody?

They are having trouble working out the requirements for either Korea or Kazakhstan. Anyone adopted from there?
Ethiopia. Apparently adoptions are increasing from there and it is generally a good program but I heard that if adoptions of infants go up dramatically as well as agencies that work in country, then corruption will begin to go up?

Finally, I do know that some la's don't exactly like IA, but i haven't heard of anyone who has been homestudied by our la for IA (it's lincs). Anyone have any experience of them at all?
Thanks in advance, sorry it's such a long post!!!

I would suggest your friend contact OASIS helpline and get the most up-to-date information as it changes all the time.

We adopted from Russia and had no real problems from the Russian end of things. Once we had got through the English beaurocratic nightmare the Russians were a breeze and we got a court date very quickly.

Yes I can quite believe that China is curently running at 4 years for a match.

Russia (and Kazakhstan) can both have birth parens turn up up to 14 days after court the smae as UK - but a) it happens very rarely and b) just becasue birht parens turn up doesn't mean they will be granted custody.

Never known anyone adopt fom Uk from Korea but Kaz is suspended at the moment they have just ratified Hague convention and are making sure their proceudres are up to scratch expect to reopen by Sept. Currently few requirements but thet may change with Hague - financially stable, no maximum age but there is a rule of thumb sme juges apply of max 40 yr age gao between mother and child but 40-45 year gap is really not uncommon. Childrne as young as 6 months possible but rarely most commonly youngest age is 1-2range.

Intercountry adoption helpline is also a good place to call in Barnet.

Doesn;t mater what your LA think of IXA - they are obliged to assess you but it might make it an effort .. but then thats good practice for ICA!
