Has anyone gone through adoption, when one side has voluntary put themselves into a mental health hospital as a teenager, my son in law was in a serious crash as a teenager which resulted in his brother dieing and he nearly died twice on the operating theatre.
He's had no issues since and is 40 now, has a good career and got his life back to normal

This wouldn’t stop your son in law adopting. If anything it can be a positive in many ways. As long as he is open and honest as possible

Someone who went through the adoption training with me experienced something seriously traumatic in her early 20s.
It was discussed as part of the process but it didnt cause any issues in her being approved.

As pp said, the key thing for social workers is for them to know you’re being open, honest and have done what is required to get yourself well, and to have support ready/know how to access it if you need it again in future.

He should expect it to come up as part of the assessment and he should not get angry, defensive or try to down play it - often it's how you respond to their questions that matters. It won't be a deal breaker - equally, it needs to be discussed.
