Does a ‘go between’ service exist for adoptees to know medical information?

I am an adopted person and it took place in the early 80s. I was adopted as a very very young baby, I have a wonderful mum and dad and no interest in forging any links with the woman who gave birth to me. I have my adoption file, there were no nasty circumstances (she didn’t tell anyone about the pregnancy until I was almost born, and she was a teenager), and I feel no animosity to her; she’s just a non-entity to me as I have my parents. I have no desire to go blundering into her life and upsetting things.

The file I have is very thorough but obviously only gives the information that existed at the point of my birth. I would like to know if any health conditions came to light further down the tracks, particularly those that can be genetic. I have a few health conditions (one fairly rare) myself and can never answer the ‘is there a history of…’ questions.

Is there a way to find this out without me being the one to make contact?

You could ask the local authority to help. They have to do this but they can and do charge for it. They could get a social worker to contact her and ask for any info. We did something similar when our girls were found to have a genetic deletion - the sw contacted birth mum and she agreed to be tested and she shared the results with us.

Of course it could open up a whole can of worms for your birth mother if you approach her via a sw. But yes you can definitely do this.

Alternatively you could do a dna type test.
