Has anyone applied for an Irish passport for their adopted child in England? Looks like my child beeds to be on the intercountry adoption register and the process seems arduous as we need a aolicitor to sign for it.

Yeah, it is a bit of a pain, but it does need to be a intercountry adoption. We applied for it straight after their other passport, and it was easier because we just went the same proofs along with the form and a letter from the solicitor with the relevant signatures.

Yeah it is a pain. Though the bit with the solicitor doesn't need to be a letter - they just need to witness the form being signed, and it can be anyone else who is able to take statutory oaths.

It can also just be someone who knows you who happens to be a solicitor, for example, which is what we used.

Following with interest. So is it not possible to apply for an Irish passport when it is not inter country adoption? I have an Irish passport. My adopted son is British. I adopted him in the uk where I live. I did start the process a decade ago but gave up as at the time it seemed we were not allowed to apply as we were a same sex couple. I believe that may have changed.

@RockingBeebo no, I think it does need to be intercountry as the process happened abroad and needs to be referenced against standards for child trafficking/exploitation etc. it's about the child not being born in ROI, I guess, and them needing to be sure that all the paperwork was done appropriately to the same standards.

The rules changed relatively recently, so I don't know if they can be applied retroactively. When we first started the process, we couldn't apply because of the same sex thing, but by the end of it we could.

Sorry I'm not much more help! Definitely worth another look though.

Thank you. Do you happen to know if my son would be eligible to get a passport via a person who wasn't born in Ireland but has obtained citizenship via parent who was born in Ireland? I cannot find the answer online at all

You should be able to, that's what we did!
