Hi all,

My partner and I are looking to start the adoption process in the near future. We've done some research about stage 1 etc but was just looking for more info on the information social workers gather for the background checks. For example; with the financial check what is it they ask for to prove your stability? Your P60? Or your paychecks? Your bank statements or even your contract? Or all of them? Just in a bit of a predicament at work with a potential job opportunity and trying to work out the safest route to ensure financial stability and proving this to social workers.

Thank you in advance. 🙂.

They wanted to see bank statements that proved we had the money we said we did, our mortgage slips and credit card bills, made us do budgets that showed expenditure with and without kids, and how that would change and asked to see evidence of the policies at work that proved we would be eligible for enhanced adoption payments.

I would say that if you haven't started stage 1 you have plenty of time to make a career or job change now and work through it. I changed jobs at the end of stage one and was well established for nearly a year before we were placed, and our adoption was considered speedy.

Thank you, this was very helpful 🙂.

Basically everything you mentioned. They want to see you have no huge debts and that finances won’t be an extra pressure when a child is placed. Adopting is hard enough without money worries. We were asked how we would finance adoption leave, what would happen if one of us needed to leave work, what if the child was sick could we afford sick leave etc etc.
