There is sadly not a lot of useful information around selective mutism, especially through the lens of adoption/trauma.

There was a short BBC TV series a few years ago that followed 3 families whose children suffered with selective mutism. I think it was called, 'My child won't speak'. You may be able to find it online?

My son used to be a selective mute. It has been a long journey but although still reserved and quiet when around people he doesn't know, he does now talk in all situations.

If I can be of any help having gone through this with my son then please ask. I only really know what helped him and it may not be relevant or suitable for your child but some things may be transferable.

Thank you. Was your first stop GP? My LO speaks constantly at home and has a great range of vocab. He speaks a bit in nursery (after 2 years) but in social situations and with extended family he doesn't know well he can not speak at all or he will speak one word if I speak first for example I'll say, "Let's say goodbye, thank you" and he will say that. I'm worried GP will dismiss because it is not consistently non verbal. But I want to find ways to protect him from unhelpful relatives telling him to use his words which I find frustrating and upsetting.

Hi. My daughter used to have selective mutism. With the help of a very understanding, small school and our close family members all being on board she managed to overcome it. We found that " The Selective Mutism Resource Manual" was a very useful guide for us as well as the staff at school.
