Settling in grant

Hi all,

Could anyone who's had a settling in grant please let me know how it works for you? I've had little one for a week now and have asked about this twice via my SW who has been trying to get answers but hasn't heard anything back from the local authority, we're with an agency. Do you have to spend it on specific things and provide receipts or do they pay you the lump sum?

Our grant was agreed and paid before my two moved in. The local authority agreed an allowance for things like a bed, bedroom furniture, car seat and I submitted receipts once I had bought them to show where the grant had been spent.

I would think it would come from your agency rather than the local authority? (Not sure just my thought). Ours came from our placing local authority and was for specific things with receipts provided, cot etc.

You should have an agreement between your adoption agency and the local authority about what their funding for settling in. Then you need to keep all the receipts. If you look at all your preparation paperwork is it not in there?

A Settling in Grant is agreed and paid for by the Placing LA. This is done as part of the Matching Process and submitted to Matching Panel in the APR.

From what our social worker told us, different LAs have different ways of doing it, if they do it at all...

Our LA just paid us a lump sum per child and didn't ask for receipts (although we kept them anyway just in case).

Some require it like an expenses form and some don't require evidence at all. Some LAs don't pay a grant at all apparently.

I know that's not very helpful, but it really does depend on your LA! we also ended up getting ours a couple of months after placement. Do keep chasing, it's amazing what can be "forgotten" (jist as an fyi, life savings and any pocket money should also be transferred to you, and every child in care should have about £700 plus any other saved money given to them for their savings once the AO is granted, so do pop a date in your diary to chase that too! Your kid is entitled to it, it is theirs so don't let them miss out.)

I wouldn't count on getting a grant very quickly- it seems to be misnamed, because by the time you get it, the kids are already settled enough to have needed the bed and mattress! We figured there would be delays, so budgeted to not have it by getting as much stuff second hand where possible and then using the money when we got it to buy other stuff that we wanted or needed but were not strictly necessary- so we invested in some reusable bed pads, reusable nappies, a foldaway futon for the bedroom so we could settle them in the night and be near them, nightlights etc adoption specific books, grow clocks, baby cams etc so that if we were asked to justify it we could.

Years ago now, but we had to provide receipts.

All of our financial support was agreed at the matching panel - we were given support for legal fees, settling in grant, travel and accommodation for intros (children were 250 miles away) and an ongoing adoption allowance. Our children were considered difficult to place and fell under legislation for particular financial support, which we didn’t know about until after matching.

We had saved for all of these, and extended adoption leave, so while the money wasn’t needed it was very welcome.

What was the agreement about financial support - not all adopters/children qualify for financial support so unless it was specifically agreed, it may not be forthcoming. If it was agreed keep chasing it. It will usually be paid by the placing authority unless it’s part of a package from the VA that assessed you.
