Support for birth mothers following adoption

Hi all, sorry if this is the wrong place but I’m hoping someone might be able to give me some advice. A family member has recently had her baby placed for adoption in a closed adoption and is struggling to cope in the aftermath. Is anyone aware of any support groups online that birth mothers can access to chat to others who may be in a similar situation? We’re in the U.K. but she’s just looking for people who’ve had a similar experience to talk to.

Thanks

Post on the excellent adoption board here. Mostly it’s adoptive parents who frequent it, but there are a few regular birth parents whose children were adopted, and the support will be knowledgeable.

Have a look at pause.org.uk

Oh, thanks, I hadn’t even seen that board. I’ll have to search harder!

It’s under ‘Becoming a parent’, with the baby names, pregnancy etc boards.

Thank you, I’ve found it and made a post :)

I've looked but can't find it, can you link please?

A lot of local authorities have independent agencies linked to them that they can refer birth parents to, have a look on their website or encourage her to ask the children previous social worker.

caspertheghost · 27/05/2023 07:57

She’s still in contact with the social workers so I’ll tell her to mention it. I know she’s tried Facebook groups but hasn’t got anywhere.

Hi @caspertheghost we're moving this thread over to our Adoption topic.

It is a legal requirement for Local Authorities to provide independent counselling and support to birth relatives. This apparently often does happen, but your relative has a right to it.

The book "Supporting Birth Parents Whose Children Have Been Adopted" https://amzn.eu/d/iaDqXs2 has a lot of valuable information.

http://www.familylives.org.uk and https://www.pause.org.uk/ might be able to advise your relative.
