Adoption

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on adoption.

Nursery Requesting Paperwork

WittyUsername123 · 31/01/2023 15:48

We are pre-AO with our oldest- traditional adoption route, just slow process etc.
We are trying to register him at nursery and they want ‘paperwork’ about the process and to prove we have PR, but we have no such paperwork. LOs social worker is as useful as a chocolate teapot.
What paperwork could we supply?

When your LO was Placed with you after Intros you would have been given some paperwork. That paperwork says you are on a pre adoptive Placement and have PR.

Use that.

Ted27 · 31/01/2023 16:54

You must have something- letter/email from the panel, matching certificate?

I signed several bits of paper before intros, including one which set out what I was responsible for until the AO and what was still the LA

WittyUsername123 · 31/01/2023 18:15

We genuinely don’t have any paperwork- we have made repeated requests and have been brushed off.
We were given a matching certificate but it doesn’t name the boys on it- we were literally given nothing at all on placement day.
I am thinking I need to make a complaint at this point!

What the heck @WittyUsername123 you need that piece of paper to:

Register with the GP, to take to A&E, register with the dentist, register with nursery/school etc. It is the only legal document that proves that you have the children placed with you and that you have an element of PR.

I carried a copy of it & the birth certificate everywhere (photo on my mobile)

As I said earlier on the day that the children were officially Placed with you you should have signed some forms. And on that day been given;

  • a copy of the birth certificates
  • the form I have mentioned saying that they have officially been placed and that you have some PR.

If you don't have these things you need them URGENTLY. The child's SW gives you them
If you cant get a response from them go to their Manager... ring, ring & ring

Without them YOU have zero proof of being the children's carers with official organisations you go to.

I hope you get this sorted this week.

Xx

This is what I thought! Thank you, that is so validating. The LA lost the birth certificates too… nightmare.

Our kids have been with us just over a year, we are still pre AO but I didn't need anything to register at gp, school / nursery etc.

We didn't get this magical document you are referring to either.

claireb7rg · 31/01/2023 20:37

We also didn't get the birth certs for 4 months after they moved in

Chocapple · 31/01/2023 21:45

How bizarre @claireb7rg I definitely needed the documents to show my son was mine (pre AO) otherwise I could have been some random with a child from somewhere.

That's school, child benefit, GP, hospital DLA, Tax Credits, Child Tax credits, passport. The forms ask for the birth certificate/proof of parental responsibility. I remember having to turn the house upside down to find them several times photocopy them/sending originals. In fact I had to request an extra copy of them once as I didnt get originals back (grr).

The Optician and dentist just 'took my word' as well as other non official official organisations.

On Placement Day my son's SW gave them to me in a very special envelope. And said guard these and keep a copy of both of these docs at all times. And that they were crucial in case there was any situation esp an emergency where I had to show my parental responsibility e.g if I had to take him to A&E.

It's really bizarre that other people didnt get them for quite some time.

Thepinklady77 · 31/01/2023 22:49

Pre adoption order when registering my son for his pre school year I had to get the social worker to sign the form! Actually it was the principal social worker! I did not have PR so could not sign it.

registering with go was fine, they just needed NHS number. If we had to go to the hospital for emergency treatment (we didn’t ) I was told I would have to declare him as a LAC child and duty social worker would sign for emergency treatment.

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/02/2023 08:08

Your children’s names should have been on their matching certificate, which you can then use for enrolment. Do you get child benefit for them (you absolutely should), you can use that award letter as evidence of parental responsibility (if not rights), but to be honest I’d be telling the social worker the need to come and enrol your child in school, they’ll get the correct paperwork to you quickly enough then.

WittyUsername123 · 01/02/2023 10:36

Our matching certificates only have our names, not the children’s names.

We’re just so exhausted and I feel like I’m fighting everything. We had to take my son to urgent care and all we got from the social worker was a Whatsapp sticker of a unicorn that is crying with laughter? Like it’s actually some kind of farce over here for real.

@WittyUsername123 We’ve had similar experiences. Feel free to pm if you feel that would be helpful

TheOnlyHonestOne · 12/02/2023 07:12

Morning, I asked little man’s social worker for a 1 sentence email confirming who we were. It took 3 weeks but I got it & then gave to nursery.
also jellycatspyjamas can you tell me more about child benefit? We don’t get anything & could do with some help to be honest. Husband back at work but it’s finances a bit tight at the moment

ScottishBeth · 12/02/2023 10:09

@TheOnlyHonestOne yes, definitely apply for child benefit. Have a look on your LA'S website - it should have a thing you can fill in to apply. I didn't do it myself, my partner did. If you can't find it tag me and let me know and I'll ask her.

tonyhawks23 · 12/02/2023 12:32

Yes you just Google apply for child benefit and then fill it in,it's easy enough definitely do it.

TheOnlyHonestOne · 12/02/2023 13:17

Thank you both. I’ve checked and we’d have to pay the tax charge on it all

Remy7 · 12/02/2023 20:20

We've got a letter from the ADM approving the panel's recommendation to approve us which we've used for nursery and for child benefit claims.
We had to request birth certificates from our SW more than once (I asked for 2 - one to keep and one to use).
We've done foster to adopt and in nearly 2 years I've only once been asked for PR authority at a medical appointment (and we've had lots).
Hope you're sorted now OP.

WittyUsername123 · 13/02/2023 00:36

Thank you all- we finally got a letter! Still waiting for birth certs now which I believe you need for child benefit
