How are babies made

Hi so my 4 year old asked the how are babies made question to my husband this morning. He was thrown by the question and panicked and changed the subject so later he will talk to her about it and answer the question.

I had a quick Google at age appropriate answers to the question, but it all says when a mummy and a daddy love each other they make a baby. Our LO’s understanding of adoption is that she grew in bm belly, and she refers birth parents by their first names, very occasionally she refer to them as mum and dad when exploring a conversation about them.

I’m probably overthinking how to
answer her question, but how have u guys answered this when the time came?

thanks 😀 x

Mine was watching operation ouch around this age and there's an episode about it in there. It's on cbbc rather than CBeebies so you might not feel it's appropriate for her to watch but watching it yourself might help come up with the right words.

My 4 year old went through a phase like this recently. I've found it really useful for discussing adoption and not growing in my tummy.
There's a Babette Cole book - Mummy Laid an egg which gives the facts in quite a funny way. Cory Silverberg - What makes a baby - explains it all in quite generalised terms (a bit too non-gendered at times!) No mention of mummy and daddy but 'people with uteruses'. Links quite well to the Todd Parr family book too as a similar style of art work.

We’ve had this issue, my son has known how babied are made for a while, but has become more interested in it lately. We don’t know anything about birth dad for him or his sister, birth mum doesn’t know who birth dad is, well not enough to be able to identify him. He knows his birth mum doesn’t know who birth dad is, so that has led to lots of questions lately, although it turned out he thought you made a baby when you were asleep, so maybe thats why some people don’t know who their birth dad is.

To add to the above. We used to explain that some people are good at making babies but not so good at caring for them, whereas we weren't good at making them, but were good at caring.
I'd go with 'birth Mum had an egg and birth Dad helped fertilise it so it grew into a baby'. That may be quite sufficient at 4. You don't need the 'love each other very much'.

"The man puts a seed in the woman's belly and it grows into a baby."

He put the seed in from his penis. It went up a special tunnel women have, called a vagina . When the baby is ready, it comes back out down the vagina tunnel.

Just use correct words for the body and keep it simple and true.
