Want to Know More About Adoption

My partner and I decided we wanted to give a home to a child who wouldn’t otherwise have one. So What is the first thing we should do to adopt? What kinds of adoption are there? Who can arrange an adoption for me?

There's a whole forum of threads to read, and a helpful 'information' flag at the top of every thread and the forum saying "Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on adoption."

Good luck.

The first thing you need to do is research and gain some understanding of why children need new families and what that means for you as a parent.
Children are removed from their families because of neglect or abuse or both. This has long lasting consequences. Most adoptive children will have additional needs, some will be very complex and challenging.
You need to be familiar with attachment, development delay, ASD, ADHD, Foetal alcohol syndrome for starters. Many children will have multiple conditions with challenging behaviours.
You cannot just adopt because you have decided you want to. You have to apply and go through an assessment process and be approved be a panel. You will then have another process called family finding to identify a child. You then have another panel to approve you for that child.
The assessment is rigorous, you will need to be financially stable and demonstrate that you can support a child. You need stable and secure housing. Most social workers will expect the primary carer to take a year adoption leave. You may find that you cannot return to work full time or even part time ( I'm still part time after 10 years)
You can apply to your local authority or a charity such as Barnadoes - google adoption agencies in your area. Go to an information evening and talk to some social workers
I hope that gives you a flavour - you need to do your research, develop your understanding and realise that this will be nothing like having a birth child
