Starting Adoption Process

Hi All, I'm very very new to this, myself and my partner have decided to go down the adoption route. After trying ourselves for 5+ years naturally. I have PSOS and it's just not happening, I wasn't accepted for IVF as my BMI is to high. Would this stop us from adopting, we have no health issue. TIA

Potentially yes, some agencies make a bigger issue of this than others.
All prospective adopters have to have a medical so everything will be taken into account.
Talk to a few agencies and see what they say.

Good luck

hey OP, I always recommend joining Adoption UK and also their zoom meet ups for prospective adopters, they are so helpful and so supportive, you should try them! I also always say to keep your expectations on time realistic as it often takes years to get through the process and I wish wed known how long it takes at the start. yes try different agencies information evenings (probably online?) and chat to them to start the ball rolling. I dont know about BMI requirements but yes you have to have a medical as you do the paperwork.

Any agency will ask that you have come to to terms with the end of your fertility journey and that you've had time to grieve that part of your life. They will do a medical and the PCOS (assuming that's polycystic overies) shouldn't be an issue but the BMI maybe. Depending on how high it is they may ask that you take some time out first to loose weight or allow you to proceed but want to see that you're doing something about it. They will want to know if you're able to loose the weight that you won't then turn around and decide to try the IVF route, you need to be 100% committed to adoption.
Definitely ring round/contact some agencies and see what they say. Sometimes it's easier to draft it as an email then you can send to various agencies without having to re write it or repeat yourself each time. Hope all goes well for you.

It depends on your BMI to be honest, adoption doesn’t tend to be as strict as the NHS are for ivf but they will want evidence of a healthy lifestyle, ie that you take regular exercise and can provide a healthy diet and that you have taken steps to bring your BMI down. Different areas and agencies will have a different view about what that means in practice so it’s worth asking about. My BMI was 38 when I started the process and was 33 when we were approved so it’s not about being within the “healthy” weight range so much as being able to evidence change.
