Hi all,
First time poster so sorry if I make any mistakes!
I know some posters here have had success adopting with a higher BMI... did you do this through a certain agency, local authority, etc.?

What do you mean by high? Mine was about 34 when I had my medical (so I’m the obese category) and the LA doctor just write on my report that I might benefit from losing weight. It was never mentioned at any other point (other than when I brought it up). I was otherwise healthy, no medication etc so that may have helped.
I remember reading once that my LA doesn’t accept people with a BMI over 40 but there was a lady on my prep course whose BMI must have been significantly over that so it couldn’t have been a hard and fast rule.

Between 30-40; I just got a bit of a shock at an agency event where they said it had to be under 30. Working to get there of course but it takes time!
Thank you so much for your reply Smile

I’ve never heard anywhere asking for a BMI of under 30. Is that with an LA or a VA? It’s definitely worth talking to a variety of places and see which one is the best fit for you.

There’s a big stretch between 30 and 40, mine was 36 and we were approved without difficulty, I think the closer you are to 40 it gets much harder and of course working to reduce it will help especially if you’re able to evidence a reduction.

Yes I see what you mean! We can definitely evidence a reduction but hoping to make it quite a lot more now the gyms are open. Smile

I’ve got a high BMI and it was even higher when I adopted my second. Doctor put it in the medical report. My SW asked me about it and I said I planned to lose weight through slimming world. It wasn’t brought up again. I was with a LA and they didn’t have any issues with it at all :)

SFCA · 13/04/2021 19:22

Mine was 43! Came through a LA. It obviously came up in my medical but fortunately no associated medical conditions, BP etc were fine but was in my late 20s.

The SW wanted to know how I was going to reduce it and I got it down a little pre-panel so it was good to show I was serious. My son is tube fed and we adopted him specifically but I would guess the other thing to clarify is that you understand what a healthy, balanced diet is and this is what your children will have.

My BMI is now 24, no one ever checked I was losing weight, it wasn’t mentioned at panel but becoming a mummy was the kick up the butt I needed anyway 😂

Good luck on your adoption journey

PoppityPop · 13/04/2021 19:31

@SFCA wow, that’s amazing weight loss!! Would it be terribly rude to ask how you lost that? Mine’s gone from 38 to 30 but I’m at the point where I could do with some inspiration!

My wife has a high BMI, we anticipated it coming up at panel so we joined the gym so we could say we were working on that. Our social worker was good though and looked at the whole picture; she knew we had a healthy diet, didn't drink much and wife has an active job that involves working outside doing physical work a lot. So all of that combined meant it didn't come up at panel. This was through LA.

After lockdown and placement it's all gone to pot now 🤣
