I wonder if anyone has any advice on how support goes if adopting out of your own county? I think its with the placing county for 2 years, but in practice how does that work? For example can you get your adoption support plan to organise things in your area or does it work that you have to go back to placing area for appointments ? I know I need to talk to our sw really but wanted to get an idea of real life experience about how practical it is when adopting out of county or if its just really really hard.

Our experience has been pretty negative to be honest. Our son came from a county about 3 hours away and support from his local authority has been non existent. We have had good support from our own social worker (a voluntary agency) but distance is often cited as an excuse from his LA and covid hasn't helped. I'm hoping his LA are just particularly bad and this is not the norm.

Hi
In england you remain the responsibility of the home LA for 3 years post adoption order.
In terms of accessing suppport groups etc is imposible for practical terms but you should be on mailing lists for resources etc.
They should be able to help you access local services if you need them.
Our three years was up halfway through an application to the Adoption Support Fund. The SW from the home LA did the assessment of need and application to ASF, and handed over to our LA, with a bit of joint working in the middle
