Adoption books for young children

Anybody got any recommendations for good books on a new brother/sister coming home?

Everything I've seen is either Americanised and/or for couples.

Big brother/sister books I've looked at aren't really great either as they all talk about sibling being in ()birth) mother's belly. Have tried the Nutmeg one but that's not accurate either as speaks of birth parents seeking help from SW and asking for children to be found new family.

Any tips please?

I had the same issue. This book is Americanised but the best I found.

Gus Becomes a Big Brother: An Adoption Story https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0978609395/ref=cmswwrcppapifabcc_P850QETMZ1W49WJXAP55

Have you read docmcstuffins 'Baby mcstuffins'? Its lovely. Also we read 'The Nanny Kids Goat' recently but not to much about brothers/sisters but cousins.
We've just started ballet shoes which is for older children and all the children were adopted.
My son loves that Frodo was adopted by Bilbo but again not about a baby coming home.
All just kind of useful natural talking starting points?

scully29 · 25/02/2021 08:21

Thanks for that Gus one, ive ordered that too now! And saw another called 'Am I supposed to feel this way' so ordered that too!

DodoBaggins · 25/02/2021 08:24

"Emma's yucky brother" may be worth looking at.

Giovanna1712 · 25/02/2021 13:07

Thanks guys, have just ordered the Gus one, and a BAAF one Tommy finds a family. I think I'm gonna end up writing my own you know as got the Todd Parr family book but be nice to have adoption and our family (single parent) in the same place. Will have a look at the other suggestions too; thanks everybody. G x

I wished for you by Marianne Richmond and A Mother for Choco by Keiko Kasza are both lovely single mum (well, no mention of another parent) adoption stories for small children. I am not sure they quite meet the brief on your other criteria as they are not really written about a big brother/sister, but still nice ones to add to the mix.

Thank sunshineandskyscrapers, will make a note of those. Hopefully some will be arriving tomorrow so fingers crossed!

I’ve just got one called ‘you’re the biggest’ off Amazon. It talks about when the baby comes but no mention of pregnancy etc. Our second is a baby so it fits. But the book is all about the elder sibling being the biggest, teaching them how to share, sharing dreams etc, it’s lovely

Hels20 · 27/02/2021 13:53

I know you have asked for books - but my adopted five year old adores adores adores Despicable Me because it is in part about adoption. He has watched DM 1 and 2 about 30 times. And we always talk about adoption when he watches them. He loves them.

EarnshawLintonHeathcliff · 28/02/2021 04:01

Thank you Mrsdoubtfireswig (Grin that nameGrin) that is on my shortlist. I got A Family For Tommy and Gus Becomes a Big Brother, the latter was very lengthy though, far too much to hold the attention of my 3y old even with me condensing it. Hopefully she'll like it more as she grows. Smile

Hels20 thanks for that. Glad your little boy loves it, he has good taste...I love them too Grin Sadly try as I might I can't get my little one to watch anything that isn't PJ Masks or Peppa Pig at the minute. Although we did have a bit of a fixation on Jungle Book at one point but even that doesn't get a look in lately. Looking forward to legit reason to sit watching cartoon films though as most of them are great!

Our SW has just recommended The Blanket Bears. Haven't bought it yet, but planning on watching on YouTube to see it will apply to my daughter expecting a new sibling.

EarnshawLintonHeathcliff · 05/03/2021 03:25

Thank you Biscuitkeeper, will do the same then as haven't heard of it either.

Wish by Matthew Cordell. I find it hard to read as its very emotional in a happy way but out LO loves it.

EarnshawLintonHeathcliff · 12/03/2021 02:26

Ooh thanks Adoptodad will have a look at this.

I got another new one last week, not adoption related but is ambiguous enough to be. It's the New Little Person (I think!) is by the creator of the Charlie and Lola cartoon so similar illustrations, has proved I hit so far. And the Families book by Todd Parr. Both have been requested a few nights on the trot so am taking that as a positive.

We love the families book also ‘we belong together’ which is about adoption but doesn’t doesn’t specifically it - it’s lovely (and you can always adapt to fit your own sayings)

Suolbaf · 13/03/2021 01:24

Lots of great suggestions on here. Been looking and only found 1 or 2 previously. Someone has suggested doing their own which I think I might do as would like a more specific one too - specific to us.

Will defo try some of the suggestions out and if I find any others will post x

EarnshawLintonHeathcliff · 14/03/2021 23:57

Yes I'm considering doing my own too Suolbaf. Will definitely be doing my own life story book as mine is pitched for a much older child.
