Adopting after cancer

Hi, I was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and I've recently had a hysterectomy, so obviously no more babies for us. We have one DC who is nearly 2. It's early days and we're not in a rush but DH and I think we'd like to adopt one day. However I'm wondering if my cancer diagnosis will prevent this. Has anyone here been through similar and if so would you mind sharing your experience? Does it automatically rule us out or would I need to be cancer free for a certain period of time? Thanks in advance.

No it doesn't rule you out. We adopted after I had cancer. We approached our local authority and asked if I had to be clear for a certain time and they said no. We started stage 1 when I was 8 months clear. The medical officer turned round at this point and said they would prefer me to be another year clear before we proceed any further so had to wait but then picked up and all was fine.

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Agree with Mumtolittlesausage I had breast cancer whilst being assessed, fortunately it was in a milk duct, had a mastectomy, a bit of treatment this was in March and our son was placed in November. SS 's wrote to the surgeon who said I would be fine. Strangely his SW also had had breast cancer. Good luck.

I'm sorry about your diagnosis. I had cancer in 2014. I spoke to a couple of agencies prior to starting the process, one wanted me to be 3 years clear, one said 5 years. I was over 3 years at the point of initial contact and my adoption agency just needed a report from my consultant and an early medical assessment but otherwise there were no problems. I had a single surgery which was deemed as curative.
