Cost for Dr assessment?

Just had a call from our GP saying to do the stage one medical checks we need to pay £175 each for a 30 min consultation (video if we're not comfortable going in)

Does this seem excessive? Not sure if it's normal and I'm getting funny about it needlessly

We paid but it definitely wasn’t that much!

Bouncydoog · 21/07/2020 18:18

I think ours was that for both of us, but others said it was slightly higher. I’m not sure if you have a choice if that’s what they charge?

maidmorion · 21/07/2020 18:23

£110 per person. They can charge what they like though, as it's private work. Sometimes, the practice think it's the local authority who pay, so perhaps tell them that it's very steep given you're meeting that cost out of your own pocket, to save the nation hundreds on fostering fees.

I guess compared to IVF, it's cheap?

Gah off to haggle with the GP Grin fingers crossed!

Yeah cheap compared to IVF but i would never pay for IVF so not a comparison for me personally

We are paying £100 each and have been told the assessments must be in person.
£175 seems steep!

journeytobeingadad · 21/07/2020 20:54

We paid £85 each. Was done in person and very detailed - with our usual GP and he was great.
They were quick and helpful at the surgery despite it being in the middle of covid.
As said before all GP practice set their own fees.
Took about 30 to 40 mins each

Notsofunnynow · 21/07/2020 21:37

Our LA paid for ours, is that not the case everywhere?

maidmorion · 21/07/2020 22:18

No.

Magicshoppingtrolley · 21/07/2020 22:22

Ours was just over £100 each but our GP refused to charge us! Smile

ac73 · 21/07/2020 23:52

I don’t think we paid anything five years ago.

Honeybee45 · 22/07/2020 07:42

We had ours done in April mine was £125 my husband has a different Dr and was charged £85 for his. They took roughly half an hour

PaintedLadyWBB · 22/07/2020 08:11

I think ours were £60 each last year but the doctor only charged us half the amount

AthenaMinerva · 22/07/2020 11:16

Ours were £85 each last year. At £175, it might be worth changing practices to one that charges less, unless you have particular medical issues you want to discuss with a doctor who knows you.

heycorona · 22/07/2020 12:16

First time it was free for us and local authority paid the doctors.
Second time (different GP) said we had to pay, I mentioned the adoption and that last time we didn't, so she then let us off.

Hiya, sorry to jump on but am curious what is involved in a medical? Is it literally a quick measure of weight, height, questions about smoking, dtinking, exercise? Or is it more detailed eg. blood and urine tests?

We are doing ours over video so I assume none of that is done in this instance, but if you attend irl it might include that Confused
veejayteekay · 24/07/2020 09:56

They can technically charge what they want as it's private work as others have said but it is a bit of a joke for what will very unlikely be more than 10/15 mins when it comes to it! Ours was in the region of £100 but thankfully the agency paid it. it was sposed to be a thorough medical booked in for 45 mins but was a v rushed and basic medical literally 10 mins with the Dr taking ages to write it up for the agency 🙄

SFCA · 24/07/2020 10:55

We had urine tests but not blood tests. Then blood pressure, pulse rate etc. Weight, measure only if BMI is over 30. Poked and prodded abdomen, check of arm, leg and head movement and strength, vision and hearing.

How they are going to do one over Zoom I’ve no idea 😂

Headlightsondarkroads · 24/07/2020 11:09

My initial medical was £168 and the update a further £45. Mine was done at 6pm so outside of surgery hours. I had bloods, urine, height, weight, BP and full review of my medical notes--it took about an hour.
My husband is with a different GP practice, his was done during surgery hours, took about 10/15mins and he wasn't charged.

Monstermonstera · 24/07/2020 17:21

Interesting... seems to be no consistency in the standard of medicals expected to be carried out Confused I guess it depends on agency/LA/GP!

dimples76 · 24/07/2020 21:48

My LA paid for the medical both times. At each medical (different GPs but same practice) they were quite in depth and included urine sample, breast exam, reflexes test. Last year the GP identified that I had a heart murmur and then referred me for an echo - all fine in the end but delayed the process

RoomForMore · 24/07/2020 23:25

I paid at the reception before I went in. I dont remember how much but I think it was £70. The GP told me not to bother paying because he was so happy with what I was doing. But i felt too awkward to go and ask the receptionist for the money back Blush
