Book about reproduction for 5-7yrs?

Hi all,

Long time ex poster....

DC is starting to ask questions about how babies get into tummies etc. and is the kind of child who learns via poring over books, so, does any one have any recommendations about a suitable book(s), please?

I'd like to avoid any that are written on the basis of 'mummy' and 'daddy' making a baby because that will just cause further issues. DC knows they're adopted and didn't grow in my tummy etc, but 'mummy' or any variant isn't a word that's been applied to BM, and BF is unknown. So if possible I'd like to stick to facts.

DC is very intelligent/mature but asking questions that they're not yet able to understand/can't be explained at a suitable level is an ongoing issue and so far our very simplistic answers aren't satisfying them, but I can't find anything detailed enough that either isn't appropriate (mummy/daddy) or is too advanced (science text book).

TIA. Smile

Have you had a look at any DK or Usbourne body books? A 'how the body works' book with information on reproduction is less likely to mention mummy and daddy.

Watching with interest, as I think my lad will start asking soon.

He asked me the other day 'how did we get here...how are we here?' I assumed (wrongly) that he was talking about reproduction, as I started to talk about it (rather clumsily), he said 'no, I meant all of it...earth'. Turns out he had watched a little bit of a Brian Cox programme about the big bang and it had clearly sparked his interest. I was relieved, but it did give me a kick up the bum to be a little more organised.

Thanks, @Hotwaterbottlelove, we've got a few DK encyclopaedias (inc. one about the human body) but they're too advanced. I've got the Usborne 'How does the body work?' and the DK 'My Amazing Body Machine' books in my Amazon basket, but I can't find anywhere that covers how they approach the reproduction topic.

We're semi-shielding and so can't get to a bookshop, or the post office to return the books if they're not right. It would've been really handy if DC had kept their questions until life resembled some kind of normality! I might just order them and then pass them on if they're not right.

Haha! @Weatherforducks we had a very similar question a while ago - 'how did the first people get on Earth?' Explaining evolution over breakfast to a frustratingly inquisitive young child is not my idea of fun! Grin

The baby topic started with 'how do you know there's a baby in your tummy?' Then very quickly veered into sex. DC is still very young so I'd rather not get too technical just yet because I don't think they'll understand and we'll just get more and more questions in their attempts to understand (and we'll get tied in more and more knots trying to explain appropriately and simply enough!).

Where Willy Went doesn't mention mummy and daddy.

Youtube has some nice videos explaining fertilisation if you root around for it.

Re evolution, the national geographic The Story of Earth which is on youtube is absolutely amazing, dc loved it when they were 6 - 7
