What happens at initial home visit?

We are right at the start of the adoption journey and have had our phone call with the agency who have recommended us for a home visit from a social worker. Can anyone please advise what is likely to happen?
What sort of things are they looking for?
Obviously we will make sure the house is clean and tidy but our garden is a bit of a mess at the moment as we've had some work done and need to get a skip to get rid of some waste - will that go against us?
Any advice gratefully received!

@Potts13 Thanks for replying. You don't need to answer this but did you know you wanted to adopt when you chose a rottweiler?

It looks like they are 'people dogs' so I wonder why they have such a bad reputation.

@Italiangreyhound no we got our dog a few years ago, the family have had rotties in the past so we knew the breed. We explored other baby avenues before settling on adoption afterwards. Like any breed bad owners give them a bad name and they are a big strong dog that look intimidating. As long as he passes their assessment he will be fine to remain and I guess he will be included when they look to match us with children. He is brilliant with our nieces and nephews I just need him to stop jumping up at guests when they walk in!

Hope your dog will get a bit calmer and all will be well. We have some big dogs in my extended family and I know how some breeds just seem right for some families.

@Potts13 I know this was posted a while ago, but could I ask how you got on? Did you proceed with the dog assessment? I'm looking into the adoption avenue at the moment, but a bit concerned as we have two very exciteable/nervy dogs. Have gone through a lot of training etc but one does still jump up at people occasionally. So would be interesting to hear how you managed the assessment :)

Hi, yes we did go ahead, just started our stage 2 assessments. We went ahead with the dog assesment, the adoption company we have gone with use a third party dog assesor who come and do a home visit. They asked about his socialisation and training etc and then rough housed him a little bit (pulled on ears, shoved him a little bit) to gage his reactions. Ours is excitable but luckily a big dope and didnt react at all. We look have the kitchen marked off with baby gates so he has an area to go to thats out of the way if we need to separate him to calm him down. Overall he was happy, gave us some pointers for further training and then signed him off as no risk :-)
