Experiences with FAS

Just wondering what experience you have had with Foetal alcohol spectrum. We have been linked with a little boy whose birth mum drank throughout pregnancy. We've spoken with his social worker and medical advisor, who said basically he's hitting milestones at the moment and doesn't have the facial features but here's what to watch out for. The FC was previously a paediatric nurse and doesn't seem worried. They have been really good at telling us what to look out for in the future and what support we can access, how to go about getting a diagnosis etc.

He's almost 12 months old at the moment so we don't know how he will be affected in the future. I find that kind of uncertainty quite difficult! Although of course will be committed to him no matter what.

I'd like to hear about your experiences. Thank you :)

I have just been reading about it on the NHS that it's present in 25-50% of children with FAS. But I suppose it could be unrelated! We have been told he's babbling and weaning on track but the social worker is new and doesn't know him that well, so we won't know more detailed information until we meet the FCs. They are switched on though and have been good at providing information. We are committed but also it is quite daunting!

Maybe I need to do less research in a way! I've always been a fan of preparing for the worst and hoping for the best but maybe I need to chill out and try to enjoy the process a bit more.

I spoke to a friend who helpfully told me it's not too late to pull out. She's a very practical person and I know she was trying to be helpful but not what I needed to hear really!

So I'm glad to have posted here. I usually reply at work from my phone so it's not easy to reply individually but I am reading and appreciating all responses!
