Nurseries - named staff for (post-) LAC children?

I know that schools in England and Wales are required to have a designated teacher for looked after and previously looked after children. Is the same true for nurseries? My nursery doesn’t seem to have one (or any understanding of the needs of an adopted child) but I’m not sure if this is a requirement or not.

Argh the title should be ‘named staff member....’

edit by MNHQ - we've changed that for you

I never had a named person responsible for either of my children at school. They are now in Y7 and Y9

There is usually a person responsible for children who attract PP funding and in my daughters new secondary I was very impressed that they have a teacher who is solely responsible me for the welfare and development of LAC and previously LAC ( it's the reason I chose the school to be honest)

All other schools I've had experience of lump all of the children who get PP funding together which leads to quite a few misunderstandings.

One thing I will say is that both of my children attended pre schools and all
children , regardless of status were allocated a named key worker.

I don't think it applies to private nurseries, certainly not in my experience. My son has attended two private nurseries and apart from being able to claim pupil premium they couldn't be less interested in his adopted status. Presumably if the nursery is attached to a school then they'd come under the designated (p)lac person for the school, though.

As Angels said, all nursery children should have a named key person, but this is for everyone and nothing to do with being adopted.

In school, they come under the virtual head teacher for LAC and former LAC, but I don't know if that covers nurseries. Mine just came under the SENCO, and they did all the SEN reviews.

Ours was a private nursery, had good SENCO engaged with Local SEND outreach, 30 hrs free child care. Did EHCP for him ready when he started school., also applied for level 11 funding from LA for extra support and staff training. Have too explore and ask questions too find suitable nursery , we visited many. One thing we found was do not judge a book by it's cover on the face of things the most hectic and what seemed disorganised was the one for us, all children were happy, talkative, engaged and noisy, place was not pristine, able too observe the office, had file for every child full daily report completed for every child. Observed great attitude and patience of all the staff.

Hi,
One of my roles in a secondary school is that I am the Designated Teacher for Children Looked After.. (I'm also in the early stages of adoption so hoping this will help me in the future!).
Every school should have a Designated Teacher, although the training is pretty poor in my local authority so there is no guarantee they would have any understanding of the specific needs a CLA or previously looked after child would have.
If you are struggling, try to find the contact info for your local authorities 'virtual school' who oversee how schools are supporting CLA..
Hope this helps :)
