Adopted in the 1970s and need info

I was adopted in the early '70s as a three month old. As I age, I think more about health issues and would really like to know about my birth parents and their medical histories in case there is anything I need to be aware of.

Has anyone on here been in this position? How did you go about it as rules seems to be different pre 1975. Did you use an intermediary?

Do you have any details of the agency your adoption was arranged through? Personally I would contact an organisation that can give you specialist advice and talk through the various issues that could come up in your search.

Thank you - I will try that route. I have nothing. No info at all.

I was adopted in late 60s and have successfully traced both birth parents with the help of the adoption agency (well, the one which it combined with in the 80s. Are your APs still around and could you get any info from them?

There are several websites offering places to post requests from adopted people or birth relatives but go carefully and cautiously. I imagine if you contact your local authority or any adoption agency they have a duty to at least advise you. Pre 1975 adoptees are not allowed access to their adoption records without at least one session with a trained professional. Mine was wonderful!

I traced my birth mother with the help of my adoption agency. My birth father remains a mystery however

@bombaychef have you thought of Ancestry DNA. That us how I traced my DMs birth Father for her. She had nothing, not even a first name. Her BM wouldn't tell her.

The adoption agency should have your birth mothers name but I know several people who have had success in the last couple of years through dna sites. Although you Jay need to do more than 1.

I found mine 20 years ago - via friends reunited!

Good luck with your search.

You can apply for your post adoptive information here. www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-or-access-to-birth-records
And if you want to, you can yourself place on the reunion registry here.
www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-notes-for-an-adopted-person-to-apply-for-entry-onto-part-1-of-the-adoption-contact-register
You can also use a genealogy site such as ancestry. Good luck.

Sorry, not post adoptive, but your original birth info, mothers name, possibly father's name. www.findmypast.co.uk/content/top-tips-adoption-research
