ADHD?

tldr · 07/05/2019 12:13

I read a list of ADHD symptoms in girls recently and it couldnt have described AD9 more accurately.

But I’m also aware AC get diagnosed with all kinds of things they don’t have because in them it’s due to other factors.

If I wanted to pursue this though, what would be first step? We have no professional involvement at all atm.

TIA

We go direct through the LAC paediatrician as she's v good and happy to see us as needed, and act as a co-ordinating point on to other specialisms. I would guess you might need CAMHS for the assessment and diagnostic process. In some areas the GP can refer to them, but my understanding is that it can lead to some tiresome bouncing back and forth about whether LAC are covered by mainstream CAMHS (sigh). So the extra leverage from the paediatrician might be helpful...

Would look at self referral through your local SEND. or via GP , health worker. also May be LA's School's statutory disability team. All will end up with local Community SEND.
Need too ask advice and your concerns also explain that child is EX Looked after child ( This will give you priority lesson waiting time ) and that you feel that a Pathway plan assessment may help ascertain and help understand your child's development. If they agree this will bring on board support . Play therapy, OT., Speech and language Etc ., At the end of assessment if need be child will be assessed by Educational Phycologists they may recommend a Educational Health Care Plan, or more specialist support.
Could also ask GP for a referral too Genetics Clinic too ask for a genetic profile. For a Chromosome profile test for any underlying disfunctions issues which you may not be aware of .

Not bad thanks tldr! I close my eyes, stick my fingers in my ears and desperately imagine my happy place when I have to deal with school, but aside from that DD is a hilarious quirky little superstar who has even occasionally seen the value of sleep Shock Trying not to get ahead of myself with wild optimism on that one, but it's lovely when it happens!

I might might have an actual day to myself coming up - when I'm not supposed to be at work, no school, but DD so far absolutely determined to do an outdoor activity day with a group she goes to...we'll see how the reality pans out, but I'm thrilled she even wants to TBH.

How are the big and little feet? And more importantly, how are you?

According to a psychiatrist someone I know spoke to recently, ADHD can present in a similar way to trauma (and ASD) at this age, both affecting the prefrontal cortex. Some therapies can be very effective for trauma. But diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations are ultimately done by a psychiatrist (via referrals as per pps) I think.

Ugh. I’m trying to decide between going via PAS or going via GP and the MN jury seems to be pretty evenly split. 😬

The last time I tried PAS they sent a newly qualified SW or something to do crafting. Because that’ll fix it.

Until now I’ve been wavering as to whether or not there was even a point in trying to pursue a diagnosis but I think we’re at a point now where we need to - it’s clearly not getting any better by our parenting alone...

(Magic, Little is an absolute joy, happy, confident, normal... Big, well, see thread... Me, struggling atm tbh, but normally fairly resilient- we’ve had a tough few weeks for no obvious reason... Good to hear mini’s doing so well - 🌟 🌟 🌟 for you and your next-level parenting!)

Hello. We have a paediatrician appointment and a CAMH appointment via GP. Wish we had taken this route sooner. PAS were reluctant to pursue these avenues. After referral, we had an initial phone call with CAMH to find out if we were eligible for an assessment. At the end she said, we need to see him! That was a big relief. Awaiting appointments- 18 week waiting list. Good luck!

What is best for you probably depends where you are, as services seem to vary so much from place to place. Is it worth trying more than one thing initially to see what takes you in the best direction?

MagicKeysToAsda · 09/05/2019 16:21

Crafting??? FFS. How did you resist the temptation to make the SW a star chart (empty, natch)???

Based on that I would probably try GP first and see how you go. Actually how about contacting local Ipsea or SOSSEN and seeing which pathway they recommend locally?

It's totally not my parenting unless "next level" is code for losing my sh*t about everything being chewed (book corners, bottle tops, cuffs...) Glad little is doing so well. Deep breaths for digging in to get better support for you and for big CakeBrew

Thanks all. Yes. Crafting. Crafting and talking because 4 crafty/talky hours was going to fix what 4 years of being home hadn’t.

I’ve made an appointment for me to see GP about her. Seems like that might be the quickest route (circumventing more crafting).

If you’ve any advice about how to prepare, what to ask for etc I’m all ears. I’m a bit disbelieving that a) we’ve got to this stage and b) there’ll be any worthwhile help available tbh.
