Hello
I'm in Ireland and want to adopt but from reading in forums and googling it seems some people wait 5 years plus in this country.

Is that really the case? Are there longer waiting lists for some countries? Can you adopt within the EU more easily? Realistically what is the cost?

We are married, have no kids and are in our late 30s.

Information greatly appreciated - thank you

sorry, can you clarify - are you in the Republic of Ireland and wishing to adopt from outside of Ireland.

Every country will have its own rules and regulations with regard to adoption, so its not possible to give a general answer I'm afraid.
Thats both the country where you live, who will be approving you to adopt, and the nation you are looking at adopting from. Being in the EU doesnt make things any easier or quicker. In the UK, international adoption does not generally mean adopting within the EU. It can cost many thousands of pounds.

If you can be a bit more specific I'm sure some of the international adopters can help with advice

Where abouts roughly are you in the republic? I don’t need exact location but are you very close to a border with the north. If you were living on or close to a border you could ring the trust area in the north to ask about the possibility of them accepting you to adopt. I have absolutely no idea if that is possible but definitely worth a call.

I very much doubt a northen irish agency would assess people from the Republic. This would be an inter country adoption. As far as I am aware children in the UK are not available for inter country adoption. I would think that the only exception to that would be a child specific adoption where the child has relatives in Ireland.

I am inclined to agree Ted but right on the border areas depending on situation there can sometimes be leverage. I am suggesting it could be worth a call for example if the Op lived right on the Derry/Donegal border. I suspect they are not as if that were the case they would probably just move house a few miles into the north.

I'm guessing people in the ROI wait longer because the only children are relinquished babies as the care system there doesn't include adoption as an option?
