Please don't worry about hijacking, Jodee - no worries.

I totally take on board the fact that the path to and after adoption is fraught with many hurdles and that there are huge difficulties quite unlike those one encounters when attempting to raise a bio child. And I also take on board the fact that many adoptions fail and that there is no point in starting on a path which is likely to lead to further misery for all concerned.

But it would be nice to be met with a tiny bit of encouragement at the early stages.

Just reading A Forever Family by John Houghton at the mo which is food for much thought.

Does anyone have any recommended reading for prospective adopters.

Do let me know how you get on, Jodee and Oggsfrogg. Perhaps there would be less objection to adoption of an overseas child into a family with a bio child?? Just a thought - I have no views either way. Had either of you had any thoughts in that direction?

Did you intend to start a new thread? This looks like the middle post of a longer thread?

Loads of reading for prospective adopters will dig out a reading list when I'm at home. Most overseas countries don't have an issue with existing bio children but you have to get approved in the UK first and you would have to convince your UK social worker that it would be best for both children.

Overseas vs domestic are no different until matching stage in the UK as we have signed the Hague convention which requires us to take just as much care with all childrens rights regardless of their origin.

I know two famileis personally with DC's aged between 5 and 7 who have adopted overseas a child under 2. Very early days though so no indication of whether they have more problems then usual.

I think these untitled threads are following adoption of second child thread??
"Less objection to adoption of overseas child" - agree with Kew doubt it would make any difference. Overseas adoption can involve trips and lengthy stays to childs country of origin you'd have to be able to demonstrate that birth children could cope with all of this. The children themselves have often been in institutional care and settling here can take time, again would have to be able to demonstrate that you have though about some of these issues and the possible effect on birth children. Adoption is for almost all a difficult route to parenthood and intercountry poses some different and some same challenges as domestic adoption. No doubt this will be discussed at your initial interview. Your local Adopt UK group may be a good place to start meeting other adopters if you wish to do so and maybe others who have both birth and adopted children.

Desperateid, we're sort of in limbo at the moment and not doing anything about it (I think it's called hiding your head in the sand )

I know it sounds silly but one of the things delaying us is that we don't exactly have ideal accomodation at the moment, but then again if we at least took the first step then maybe it won't turn out to be as big a problem as I'm perceiving it to be.....

Kewcumber I'd be very interested in any books you could recommend as our local libraries have naff all.
