Hi, has anyone else had any issues with their new NHS number? Our child had preschool booster and MMR 2 before placement but now has new NHS number and has been called for it again? I assumed all info would be copied to new NHS number-is this just a glitch or do I need to manually do something?

Sorry I can’t answer your question as we’ve not had a new NHS number yet. But I hope you don’t mind me asking an additional question regarding NHS numbers. When I went to change AD’s name at the GP reception (with new birth cert) they said she won’t get a new NHS number, that it’s just like someone changing to their married name. However our SW said a new NHS number is given & that it comes from a central body but we’ve had nothing yet (2 months since adoption finalised). Not sure if I’m supposed to apply, or just wait, or if GP reception is right (unlikely after reading your post!). Thanks (sorry for hijacking!)

You do get a new number. Most gp practices dont seem to know the system. Ours came in the post a couple of months after ao granted.
And yes all info should be scanned onto new file.
We have a child with complex needs and they locked his old number before we got the new one which was fun !

Thanks flapjackfairy!

Yes ours was sorted centrally once we changed the name at the Gp but maybe something has been lost in translation hence the second request for immunisation! Luckily I have his red book!

I ended up ringing the NHS up - on about the 3rd chase letter, i wasn't springing into action when i knew we were up to date - the guy there was super helpful and nice i have to say. Not had any problem since.

It is a nightmare to get sorted.... Receptionist at my gp surgery ended up phoning a body in Preston to get the information and the change made as nothing came through automatically. The new record should though have had immunisations transferred- a lot depends on the competency of the gps admin team.
Your child then starts with a new record which is blank but with a few notes on it... Mine has a condition and it gives a brief overview of condition at time change was made, with note to refer to previous records if necessary. But they cannot access the previous records without your permission.

The GP who was responsible for my child before she was adopted recommended asking our GP to transfer her records once adopted. Apparently the child's medical history is deleted if you don't request the transfer of NHS records at the time of adoption.

I don't think records transfer unless you request it. I doubt that's anything to do with the competence of admin staff, it's just standard to protect the data. I was quite glad to know all BPs details are not on DC's records, as it's a blank slate. Worth taking in the red book and updating them on imms for.
