Did you get any say in your child's name?

If you didn't get a say, do you like the name?

Our eldest two were already named. Neither were names we would have chosen. I do like DD2s name but not keen on DD1s full name but she goes by a nickname that I do like.

DD3 came to us at birth and we chose her name.

I liked our Los name. It was the name of a family member who passed away a few months before lo was placed with us. However the social workers insisted we change it because birth family live only a few miles away. We moved it to a middle name. Lo was a very young baby so wouldn't notice the change

I love our LO's names but we didn't chose them & they were given fake names when we first heard about them to protect their identity so really just luck that we like them! Def not names we would've chosen but they do suit us & it's easy to find meaning in why those names work for us inc middle names. We've changed our sons middle name just because SS got it wrong (different name on their docs to what was in his birth cert) so we felt like it had already been changed.

I remember finding it hard way back when I realised we wouldn't get to name our kids, like I'd had something very important taken away from me. But I don't feel that way now & really do love their names.

he was nearly 8 so too old to change it.

he is dual heritage and has an african name. I love his name, and it has a beautiful meaning, 'we are blessed'. And I am

hidinginthenightgarden · 20/05/2018 07:16

DD was one and we kept her name. I like it, it suits her and the SW were obsessed with emphasising why we shouldn't change names.

BPG20 · 20/05/2018 07:22

DS was 13mo and his name is what we would have chosen for a middle name. We changed his middle name to what we would have chosen for a first name. Even at 13mo he felt too old for us to switch them to be honest.

My eldest came to live with me age 8 I liked her name but she hated it as a reminder of everything that had gone before, so she was known by a different name and she changed it legally when she was 18.
My youngest was placed in my care at birth so I named her.

Mightywease · 20/05/2018 12:31

Our son was 3 and a half when he came to us so we didn't change his name but did give him two middle names from each of our families.

I wouldn't have picked his first name though I do like it, it's one of those used to be old fashioned but is now popular again names, and it suits him!

PicaK · 20/05/2018 14:50

Nope the name was a done deal. It's nice but not something i would have chosen. But then i'd have gone for Boudicca or Thora or Doris or something unusual like that -- so she's probably much, much better off without my input!!

gabsdot · 20/05/2018 15:01

We adopted our children from Russia so we could have changed their names but as it happened we liked their Russian names so we kept them.
We gave them middle names and our surnames obviously.

UnderTheNameOfSanders · 20/05/2018 16:17

8 & 2. Kept first names, could have been names we would have considered. Gave them each a second name (dropping second name of one of them).

EightWellies · 20/05/2018 17:15

DD1's name we kept the same, except for adding a middle name. I would never have picked it. DD2 had a different level of safety concerns, so we changed her name. I was surprised how easy it seemed for her. We have kept her old first name as part of her name though.

bostonkremekrazy · 21/05/2018 09:36

We have 4 siblings...3 have changed names, only the oldest kept the birth name as too old at 3 to change it. They are far too easy to find as it is, without birth names in the mix 😉....whether they were nice names or not didn't even come into discussion thankfully!

DifferentDayDifferentName · 21/05/2018 22:35

6, 5 and 2 at placement. SWs and panel said we would need to change names so we tried to minimise impact with Anglicised versions for two of them and what could be considered a nickname of original name for other. Only youngest had a middle name, we've given them all middle names and changed youngest's as none of them were aware of it. It's been tough, but they've gradually got used to it.

Allgrownup3 · 21/05/2018 23:04

My LO has a name we like so I wasn't going to change it. If I hadn't liked it I would of given them a nickname. But, we always planned to keep contact. so it would of been pretty pointless anyway changing for safeguarding.

weeboysmummy · 21/05/2018 23:13

13 months at placement and we were told not to change name, fortunately it's something we like although wouldn't have chosen it, and he was already aware of his name at that age. Allowed to change middle name though, so was still able to use the name I would have ideally liked to have had as a first name had circumstances been different.

HaveAWeeNap · 22/05/2018 00:05

Came to us aged 2 and a half. A name I never would have picked in a million years... dropped the hyphenated second half of it and stuck with the rest.
The name is distinctive, but what can you do when everybody is against it being changed. Plus I wouldn't even have changed a dog's name, let alone a child's when they've been answering to it for two and a half years

2old2beamum · 25/05/2018 22:18

Must be honest I felt we could not change our childrens names it was the only thing thing the parents gave them, we only changed 1 of our 8 as she replicated one of our birth childrens names, she was only 3 months old. DS 5 was not a name we liked, but his lovely personality it really does not matter he is just georgeous.

G1ggleloop · 26/05/2018 00:07

We had the opportunity to change our thirds name as she was a baby but kept it as it wasn't a bad name and is pretty common so helps with being more anonymous. Eldests name is less common but we love that. Middle child had an extremely common name, which we like.
