Hi; I'm interested in finding out more about adoption at one point in the future. Not at all committed.
We're from the UK but live in Australia and it seems to be that you need a fair bit of £££ behind you to be able to adopt (in either country - it's ok if you don't have experience in the Aussie system we won't be here forever and are still young.)
I'm just wondering, do you have to have a certain set of financial circumstances? We both earn ok and could (very much on a shoe string) afford to have one of us give up work and care for a young child if required, but I've heard rumours of people being turned down if they don't meet random requirements like $150,000 a year income/£75,000 ish in the UK. Is that true?
If so, on the salaries we'd earn in the uk (where we'd most likely look to adopt) just wouldn't cut that. 60k PA joint maximum.
Thank you.

Would love to know where you've heard that - £75,000 minimum !

I was earning £34,000 when I adopted and thats above national average. I don't earn that now as I am part time but I do receive some benefits.

There is no minimum income requirement but you do have to be financially stable and be able to show you can afford a child. What that means is very individual, depends on your fixed outgoings such as mortgage/rent etc.

A load of twoddle! We certainly don't earn that.
I took a year off and then went back to work and made the decision to only work when lo was at nursery and then school.
We probably earn £45K between us and manage fine. Wink

Yeah we'd not have met that criteria either. You need to be solvent and able to manage financially, you need to have a degree of flexibility incase a child placed needs someone to be home for them but there's no fixed amount you need in savings etc.

We had a combined income of £50k before tax and now I only work part time it is much less.
You have to provide evidence you can afford to care for a child. That’s it.
