hi

Does anyone have experience of this? My SW has called about a LO who's mother was infected and didn't receive treatment. Baby is still very small and was treated at birth but still a lot of unknowns but so far everything is going well.

I'm looking online and everything is talking about if baby is untreated so not getting lots of info about possible health issues if baby was treated and tests are all good so far?

I have a LONG list of questions to ask but it's mainly around mum, delivery and post birth treatment.

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated :)

I would get as much info from Sw then go to your local GUM clinic explain your need for answers to questions and ask them there. Not sure they will give guarantees. But they are the specialists. That's what I would do. It may need to be a lot of ifs and buts I view of confidentiality. However this clinic is probably the safest place for confidentiality in NHS for obvious reasons!

Has the baby been treated with IV antibiotics ? There will need to be follow up blood tests for several years . And they will want to check things like hearing and eyesight , and probably x rays to check the bones .

However, if the baby is treated early and properly ,the prognosis is good.

Most consultants in sexual health medicine have not seen cases of congenital syphilis, as women are tested ( and treated if necessary ) during pregnancy.. But some older physicians will know about it .

I'm assuming that the BM didn't get an pre natal care, so there may be other issues related to this .

From what you say, seems as though baby had Intravenous antibiotic treatment followed by negative Lumber Puncture result , and given the OK.
would check this out though, also need HIV anti viral result (though this test is Automatic for mum's, if positive baby's would need 6 weeks medication follow up).
Old myth's have changed due too Advancement's, but still have too be careful and ask all relative questions.

Thanks everyone, I have so many questions my head is spinning! Good idea about going to the clinic... Will dig out my shades and book in Grin

Only got the call at tea time and there are other adopters in the running stupid competitive linking so I may not even get the chance to ask my two A4 pages of questions....but it has to be my turn at some point Confused

I may as well give up on sleep now, have to be up in 4 hours and have a productive day at work stare at phone to will SW call
