counselling/support services for adopters - any ideas?

Does anyone know of any counselling/support services for adoptive parents or services that have counsellors with adoption specialism? (ideally telephone services).

I sometimes get a bit overwhelmed with all the complexities and would like to talk to someone who understands adoption about how I am feeling about it all - the general worries of parenting a child who has been through hard things, the guilt about not being good enough, the worry about the birth parents who lost a child, the stuff about letterbox, the fear of the future, the difficulties of helping dc to understand their identity, fear of being rejected and all that. I don't think I am depressed or not coping and my dc is doing fine at the moment, but sometimes I feel like my head is going to explode with it all (doesn't help that I am a single parent and my job is all about dealing with other people's trauma).

I do have great friends, including adopters, and have been on various adopter training courses but I want a space just to talk about me and my dc and our adopted family situation - where I can be completely selfish and it is all about me, me, me (and my gorgeous dc of course!) I have got a post-adoption social worker and she is nice enough but I don't really feel able to talk to her about how I am really feeling and tbh I don't want more social services involvement than absolutely necessary in our life.

Any ideas much appreciated

Thank you

i think adoption UK have a telephone advice line for members . And perhaps they could advise on private counsellors who have experience in adoption .

The British association of counselling and psychotherapy

www.itsgoodtotalk.org.uk

Have a database of registered practitioners by area and the issues they cover. I tried isearching for " adoption " within 100 miles of Birmingham and it gave me 650 results !

I'd be suprised if there's 65 counsellors in the whole country who are specialists in adoption, so I'd treat that with some skepticism . Maybe try to get recommendations from relevant agencies .

Depends where you are but I've have been pointed to Coram (Parent & Adoption Support Service, in East Midlands, Cambridgeshire, London and the South East) and PAC-UK www.pac-uk.org/adoptive-parentcarer-support. Not used either of them, yet...

Thanks very much - I'll follow up those leads and see what I can find
