We have adopted a child who is now 18 months old. I am not returning to work as it feels important to stay at home with him . We have asked our SW if we can apply for adoption support allowance. One of the questions he asked was how much we would be asking for. But we've no idea what is amount reasonable/possible to ask for. Please can any one give us any idea what level of funding is reasonable/available to ask for?

Our DD was nearly 4 (now 9) when placed and the adoption order was 5 months later. We get an adoption allowance of about £125/week however she has got SN and complex health needs, that seems quite reasonable to me and we get Child Tax Credits BUT we are both OAP's (old farts to you young ones) She also gets high rate DLA/mobility. Friend has an Adopted Son with Downs and she gets the same rate.

Do not know if this helps but good luck.

Yes it does help. It gives me a rough idea of the scale of the allowance. Thank you.

Your Social worker's may be unaware of new Adoption Support fund , Support for children who may be subject too secondary problem's and Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders and long term associated condition's which is included, for on-going free assessment's and long term support.
Have too apply via LA's who will then apply for Central Government Funding.
IT'S AS USUAL ONE HAS TOO APPLY TOO LA. IF ONE IS NOT AWARE WHAT IS IN PLACE AND AVAILABLE YOU DONT GET IT !!!

It may also be worth looking into DLA if you haven't already. It doesn't matter if he doesn't have an official diagnosis, but if he requires a significant amount of additional care compared to a typical child his age then he should qualify. The form is a nightmare but there will be help and advice on the special needs boards on here about completing it.
