Adopting from India - help needed

Dear All

As stated in a previous topic, we're British, living in Singapore, and trying to adopt a baby from India.

Spoke to guy at High Comm yesterday, and he said that in the past some of the issues preventing people getting UK citizenship for their adopted babies have been that although the agency in Singapore has done everything right to make it legal in Singapore, it's not legal in the country of origin.

So we need to make absolutely sure it's legal in the country of origin, but the British High Comm here have not had anyone adopting from India.

I think having read the CARA (Indian adoption body) website that as long as we adopt through them we should be OK, but I want to make absolutely sure.

Does anyone have any contacts who have recently adopted from India and who have successfully gained UK citizenship? If so, please could you e-mail me on oldnewmummy at yahoo dot com dot sg.

Thanks in advance.

sorry don;t know, best advice would be to join OASIS or ring IAC (you'd have to google them as I can;t remember the phone number) Intercountry Adoption Centre based in barnet, they have a telephone helpline

Yes I agree the IAC would poss be best to talk to but may well refer you onto other orgs.
Their website is www. icacentre.org.uk
You may well find someone with similar expereince on i-child website, can't remember exact address but should get it through google.
CARA lists will show all agencies approved for foreign adoption. Do contact them to see how long their waiting lists are and whether they have previously had any adopters from Singapore or are happy to consider it. It will help if you have Indian nationality or registered NRI certified status which you can do through Indian High Commission. Hope this helps. We had our annual picnic this weekend (Asha Group for those whose lives are affected by adoption from India -adopters and child and adult adoptees, grandparents etc) and there were quite a few there with quite young children adopted over the past year from various states. You can register to receive info on Asha through IAC which will include e mailed newsletter. Good Luck.
