Gift Idea for Friends Adopting

Friends are adopting a boy who is 13 months old. I was unable to find any "congratulations on your adoption" cards but found a suitably worded alternative. I'd like to buy them a gift, but they have already been given plenty of clothes, toys and books, and apart from a money box I could not think of anything else. Does anyone have any suitable ideas?

What about a hand and feet casting set?

Larger clothes? Everyone buys them to fit and you have nothing for when they get bigger. Photograph album, nice shoes for when he's walking, nice childrens plates, cups etc that you wouldn't splash out on for yourself but would make nice present.

height chart thingie

Do you live nearby? Could you give them a "voucher" saying that you will babysit for them once their ds is really settled in.

It might help them to mark the occasion by having a night out alone to celebrate.

Alternatively, what about an apple tree to plant in the garden so they can watch it grow along with their ds.

FYI - I'm adopting and I'd love the hand and feet crafting set thing. Most people only think of it for small babies.

Some excellent ideas - I especially love the tree idea and the babysitting voucher.

Name a star?

The only problem with the babysitting idea is that Parents of adopted chidlren are trying to bond in the early days and generally don't hand over to care to anyone for many months - you would need to make clear that it a long term offer!

i think that if you go on netmums ; what mums do type thing you might find adoption cards.

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 16:17

sue. i agree. still have not done it with dd. good idea. you ok?

suejoneziscalmernow · 12/09/2006 16:34

yes but v v busy - shouldn't be on here at all - 5 min coffee break in work (no lunch break!)

suejoneziscalmernow · 12/09/2006 16:36

many baby cards are appropriate though - no need to go to the extra effort of adoption ones - baby cards that talk about "arrival" are just fine. I would be perfectly happy with one of those (hint, hint Nanou)

One of the nicest presents I got when we adopted ds was a set of wooden letters to spell his name that I put up on his door with double-sided sticky tape. The letters were brightly coloured and had clowns on them.

cheaper than the cast

We have just adopted a little one and we got all sorts of gifts. When she arrived we were given lots of clothes, cuddle blankets, toys etc and we had a lot of new baby cards which were fine as she was new to us. When we actually adopted her we were given things more akin to christening gifts e.g. a charm bracelet, classic books and a necklace.

You can actually get adoption cards in Clintons. They have 2 different ones. I think WH Smith also does one. I must say I got several the same but it didn't matter. My Mum also found loads in a religious shop but then they do have the God thing!
