Department for Education school policy (adoption thread as you guys might know, please)

Hi guys

Does anyone know where on line I can find the Department for Education school policy, which includes reference to the fact that head teachers decide which academic year children go into, please?

I was told by our County Council Admissions department that although deal with admitting children to the school the head teacher decided which year they go into (if it is different from the year in which they would normally fall).

Thanks so much.

Sorry, I don't have a better link, but this blog states a name at the Dept of Education and you might be able to start there. Your case for starting school at a later age (so your little one is the oldest in the class, not the youngest) will probably be greatly improved if your social worker and any other professionals who work with your family are supportive. I wish you the very best of luck and would be interested to see how you get on with this. I would have loved to have started my adopted child a year later - in retrospect, it would have meant that his social and emotional development was more in line with his classmates. While he's academically bright, he does seem to act like the youngest in the class, rather than one of the oldest. However, even if you're unsuccessful in securing this exception to the rule for your child, a good school will work with you and your support team to ensure that enough classroom support is available. Perhaps look for a school with a nurture programme already in place - we have found our school's nurture programme to be really beneficial in helping to address some of the catch-up around emotional and social development.

Here's the start of the research papers - this is a gem - but mostly because it points you to all the other academic papers you will need - see the extensive reference list.
