Post adoption support

Hi
In my professional capacity I am working with a child who was adopted at 3 and is now 9. His mum is very strict with him- to an usual degree I think. His beh at home is becoming more worrying. There are self harm issues, he takes things- money and food. I have referred parents to camhs and an after adoption charity for support but nothing seems to be moving forward and I am now extremely worried about this child. His mum seems to have no awareness that his earlier experiences of abuse will affect his behaviour and talks about him in an extremely negative way. What kind of support is available for families? Has anyone had private family therapy and how did is go?

I think his mum needs to go on a course like Family Links Nurturing course.

I also think social services should be helping her to understand.

Thanks for this - I will pass this on. Still wondering if anyone out there has had family therapy? Where did you find therapist and how did it go?

As a birth parent I can honestly say post adoption support is on my side practically non existent. I had to remind the local authority of their legal obligation to me in order to get the post adoption counselling that is supposed to be routinely offered.
