FAS - who diagnoses?

Fairly sure my DD2 has FAS, we are having a meeting with school next week. It's more than ADHD/Dyspraxia but with many features of both.

Who would diagnose? Would it be through school/educational psychologist or health/paediatrician?

By the way, this website about FAS/FAE is amazing www.bced.gov.bc.ca/specialed/fas/

It would normally be diagnosed by a Paediatrician, after seeking reports from OT/SALT, etc, to inform.

Does she have any of the characteristic facial features? It can be a big help towards diagnosis, I think.

She has epicanthal folds.

FAS has been suspected from placement which was at the age of 18 months (4yrs ago) she then had an MRI scan at the age of 2 which was ok but they said it didn't rule out FAS and that they would see how she developed.

She has great difficulties with memory, language, attention, social cues, abstract concepts, sensory hypersensitivity etc.

Our DD Has full FAS and son FASD , both were referred too Genetic Clinic
where they were diagnosed, Referred by GP and Paediatrics.

Some Genetics are reluctant too diagnose would diagnose Chromosome disorder or such like same thing but put a nicer way.

We went through genetics initially who then referred us to a paediatrician who said he would wait and see how she got on at school. I suppose we may need to go back to the paediatrician

As fas parent said its a geneticist

They usually take bloods etc to make sure it's not something else.

My two were diagnosed by a geneticist after reading reports from the paed. She looked at their faces and hands and said they had some facial features. Although nowadays they are not so bothered by the facial features, research has come a long way.
She did say that as there was true documented evidence of birth mums alcohol consumption it was easier to diagnose.
The FASD trust are a very good charity. We went to a study day recently, they are also setting up lots of support groups around the country.
