Hello, its me mothering you again. My Bf is adopting the sibling of her son who will be 10 months when he comes to her. Do you know of any suitable books which I get can get for her little boy who is 3 to explain about being a big brother but in an adoptive situation. All the ones I have looked at are for newborns so I thought I would come to the experts!
Any suggestions gratefully received

Mithering, not mothering!

any particular reason why you want to buy one for her? Its the kind of book I would have investigated, discussed with social worker and chosen myself. I wouldn't have been at all keen on someone else choosing one for me.

Not saying you shouldn't as I have no idea how close you were to her or how involved you have been in the process but IMO if you just want to buy her son a nice book then any book about becoming a brother just look for one that is just a nice book about being a bigger family.

I'd be surprised if a 3 yr old would be able to distinguish the difference between a new born and a 10 month old. and this might sound very obvious but I'm sure you will check that she has already told him before you give him a book announcing he's going to have a brother!

Kewcumber- I asked her if she had already got a book for her DS and we had a chat about it so asked me to get it for her. She is closest friend so have been very involved in the process regarding sibling coming. Her DS knows he has a little brother coming in two weeks time. She loves reading to him and her DS is developing a love of books too but maybe I am projecting? I have seen one my Joanna Cole that seems suitable. A lot of the books I have seen have pictures of mums with bumps and mummy in hospital with new baby etc which aren't really going to be his experience iyswim

I'll take a look at the joanna cole one - sorry to lecture but I've heard some really inappropriate suggestions of books to buy for adopters over the years, when the adopters are blissfully unaware of the intention to "educate" them or their child!

I don;t know you can get this sent here.

Are any of the Todd Parr books appropriate I wonder?

No, it's fine. It's a very sensitive area and I have asked for lots of advice on here and read around the subject on the Internet to try and support her as much as I can. I have seen some pretty shocking comments so I understand your concerns
Will have a look at your suggestions later, thank you
