adoption is something we would really love to consider, but due to issues at work i have had to see my gp as i feel low in mood at the moment. im usually a really happy person but feel bullied at work since returning from maternity leave and put into a new team. will this effect our chances of adoption?

I am no expert but I am sure people who have had depression have adopted in the past. The most important thing is to get well, so get whatever help you need to do that. If you are being bullied at work I would address that issue. I am sure others will be along with some good advice but for now I would just say get the help you need and get help at work to sort out this bullying situation.

All best wishes.

I think it varies very widely - I was required to be off my antidepressants (I was on the lowest dose prescribed) for a year before my agency would even assess me to adopt, despite the fact I was working, socialising, very much coping with life, great support network etc etc. But I've known others get approved and have children placed with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or past history of having been sectioned under the mental health act.

If you are under stress at work I think an agency will probably suggest you get that sorted out before undertaking the adoption process - it's stressful enough by itself and they probably won't consider you if they think there's stuff which needs addressing elsewhere in your life.

We adopted with both of us having histories of depression, and one of us still on medication. Needed a psychiatrist's letter that we are functioning well, resourceful and with insight into how to keep ourselves well. It wasn't a big issue but for one of us it really is very historical and for the other very well managed.

I agree with banana that having a current stressful problem in your life may lead them to suggest you resolve that first.

Hi, I have just been approved and I have had 3 short periods of depression in the last 10 years and had 2 lots of anti depressants. Mine was all work related and as long as you can show some evidence of moving on from it and have learned something about the situation or yourself from it that's all really they are looking for.

I was approved with history of depression. They liked that I had coped and had developed self awareness around mental health. It really didn't hold us back at all. Good luck. Our dd is brilliant.

Let's face it, if they excluded every woman who had ever had depression...
