I've decided to look for some information so I have applied for this
www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Birthandadoptionrecords/Adoptionrecords/DG_175567
So my question is for anyone who knows what will this record contain exactly and how long it takes to come through usually. Sorry to be vague but theres a backstory not all of it good and this isnt the place for it.

It depends upon whether the person was adopted before - or after - 1975.

This is from the website you linked to :

What happens next depends whether you were adopted before or after 1975.
If you were adopted before 1975, you will need to attend a meeting with an adoption advisor. If you were adopted after 1975, you may request a meeting or receive the information directly. Where applicable, an adoption advisor from your chosen organisation will contact you to arrange an interview.
You also have the option of approaching an approved intermediary agency about access to birth records to help make contact with a birth relative.

I was adopted before 1975, so had to go through a 'process', including an interview.

If the adoption was after 1975, I'm guessing the records may be more easily accessible - but I actually don't know the answer to that.

Have you contacted NORCAP? I'll find the link to their website for you.

Here is the link to NORCAP www.norcap.org.uk/. When I met my 'adoption advisor', as they so quaintly put it, she suggested that I joined NORCAP - it's a charity, so you have to pay a nominal joining fee, but it's probably the biggest and best in the UK for people looking to find out more.

OlaRapaceFru · 09/07/2012 18:46

Whoops - what I mean is, you should get your/the person's adoption information from the relevant 'authorities', but NORCAP has an excellent support and information system thereafter (a bit like MN)!

Sorry I've just seenthis. How are you feeling now, bunny? Did you have a chance to discuss it with your DP? Remember it's normal to feel a bit shocked/numb or even a bit deflated. And you don't Have to do anything, either now or later, just because you have this information
