I'm looking for recommendations on a a children's book about adoption. To share with my 4 yr old who is just starting to notice that his cousins ( who are adopted) do not have the same skin colour as their parents.

Our ( very small, rural) local library kids section only had "Mother bridge of love" which didn't seem to fit the bill. I guess I'm looking for a " X is adopted " type book, do they exist.

I'm sure they must exist. Why not try one of the kid's charities? Barnardo's don't do adoption anymore, but they do still help families - their website might lead you somewhere.

Jamie Lee Curtis (the actress) has adopted children and wrote a rather sweet children's book called 'Tell me again about the night I was born' - goes through the process of the parents collecting the child etc in a very pre-schooler friendly way.

The Jamie Lee Curtis 'Tell me again about the night I was born'is a wonderful book. It was almost the exact story of our adoption experience.Smile

When I was a kid, we picked up a copy of a book called "Second Hand Family" (just looked on Amazon, it's by Richard Parker, there's some used copies on there) from a jumble sale or somewhere. It's about a kid who moves from foster family to foster family until he lands up with a poor but nice family with an elder son who plays in a band. He helps out with the band, they become a hit and everyone's happy. At the end, he thinks he's going to be sent back to the care home because a social worker is going to visit, or his foster mother has to do some paperwork or something (it's a long while since I read it), but in fact they adopt him.

It's very out of date, set in the sixties or seventies, and I'm sure all the proceedures are different nowadays, but it was a good read and really uplifting.

thefirstmrsDeVere · 31/08/2010 22:15

You can do a search on amazon. They have loads and there are usually some reviews so you can get an idea of how good they are.

I havent found one that meets our needs. I have written DS his story on one of those books with a blank bit for a picture and lines underneath. Smile

I am going to have a look at the Jamie Curtis one - thanks

KristinaM · 31/08/2010 22:28

if you search on amazon there are literaly thousands of books on adoption, though obviously many are intended for adults. American books often refer to the procedures over there ( which are different). you might find soemthing specifically on trans racial adoption

UniS · 31/08/2010 22:36

Amazon do indeed have thousands. which is why I was hoping to narrow it down a bit with recommendations :-)
The JL Curtis book sounds hopeful, right country ( US) , right "type " of adoption I think ( I can check with SiL). Unfortunately our county library don't have it on catalogue but I'll check out a book shop next time I'm in a big city.

A friend bought my girls books off this web site. To prepare my girls for meeting her children. The books she gave us had some useful notes in it to help. Like talking in terms of forever families and some children are born in to them and others are not. You need to think carefully about what you say and how you say it as you don't want you children to then worry about being moved out of your family.

We like the Todd Parr book - We Belong Together. I've also read Our Twitchy to my three as the story is quite simple, the pictures attractive and it's not too long and wordy.

We also have the Nutmeg Gets Adopted book but I hate it. Far too long and boring.

thefirstmrsDeVere · 02/09/2010 12:16

I quite like the Nutmeg book although I understand why you dont wales. It does approach some of the more difficult issues around adoption.

I had a book called 'did my first mother love me?' Bloody dreadful.

walesblackbird · 02/09/2010 13:01

Oh god. I bought that one as well. It was truly terrible. I read it through and then binned it.

Just bore no resemblance to my children's life story at all.

I get the message from the Nutmeg books and it describes my children's birth family pretty well - but only one of mine actually spent any time with bm, and that was only 3 months. Two of my children have had no contact with bm from days old.

My kids found it too long and boring and tbh I found it quite tedious to read.

I think the other one I've heard recommended is A Mother for Chocco - I haven't read it though. And then of course you have good old Paddington Bear!

thefirstmrsDeVere · 02/09/2010 17:38

Isnt it dreadful? Ick.

Just gives the totally wrong message, really confusing and romaticised.

My DS wouldnt be able to read Nutmeg so I guess i am looking at it from my point of view which sort of defeats the object...Confused

Do you remember those air freshener adverts? There was a rabbit mum with skunk children or penguins with squirrels (something like that). They were an unexpected and quite useful resource Smile

UniS · 02/09/2010 21:04

nutmeg did look kinda dull & wordy, but teh library did have it ( I went to city libraray today) so I took a look. then took out the Todd Parr "different" book and a book called "what do we think about adoption" .
Boy likes the todd book, esp the dancing on your own and the worm ( which are my son to a T). The other is more for me to use bits of it with him and ignore some other bits as not appropriate for him at his age.

I think the Teazles Baby Bunny book is a good one for pre-schoolers

Go on "Adoption UK" website or British Agencies for Fostering & Adoption (BAAF) where you will find something suitable I'm sure.

nicky80 · 24/09/2010 19:17

Loads on the BAAF website.
