Vet school

My daughter is in year 9 so maybe a bit early to ask. She has always wanted to be vet. She is attending a grammar school with science and maths grades working between 7-9s. All her other grades are also between 7-9s. I just wanted to ask how difficult it is to get into vet school and if anyone has any tips for her?

It’s extremely competitive, depending on what Uni you’re looking at. Two of our children went to Glasgow and if I remember correctly it was AAA at A Level including Chemistry and Biology, AAAAB highers plus BB advanced highers in Scotland, the selection process is rigorous to secure a place. There were also a few tests to get through before getting to interview stage. The interviews were tough and you need work experience in a vets too. It says a week work experience but none of the students that started had just a week they had loads of work experience. Remember it’s unlikely they’ll be able to work while studying because the course is intense and there’s placements. It’s not cheap to support them for 5 years.

I know for Glasgow there’s only approx 70 places a year for UK students from around 800-850 applicants. 250 are invited for interviews and only 70 odd actually get on to the course.

You might get more responses from parents with DC studying Vet Sci over on the Higher Education forum.

This is a forum for those of us who work in universities.

Very difficult, my DD didn't get in even with an undergraduate degree in zoology and a Masters in biology. She went to Poland for vet school, graduated a couple of years ago (having met the love of her life there), and is working in the UK, aiming for specialist training after 3 years of general. It's a path worth considering. (A bonus that the Polish uni fees were very much cheaper, even taking into account a living cost allowance).

Was the course in polish or English?
