Dundee redundancies

632 redundancies is a lot. Poor staff at Dundee. The article I read said about 200 academic posts going, 120 school based professional services and 300ish other professional services. Approximately 1/5 of staff. It will have such an effect on the city. I wonder when they’ll find out exactly what positions will go. Must be horrible to wait.

I cannot get my head around how a university can operate with so many job losses. It’s all going to collapse around them.

I agree. I suspect that either bankruptcy or functional collapse will follow shortly, sadly.

Bobthecob2 · 01/04/2025 12:34

If they go bankrupt what happens to the students?. Some could transfer elsewhere, but not all 17k of them.

It’s already affecting the city badly. House prices are stagnating or dropping, unlike most of the rest of Scotland.

There are lots of vacancies in the rental sector, when usually it’s chock a block with students from Dundee, Abertay and St Andrews.

West park halls ( near Harris academy ) and one section of Parker House ( at Dudhope roundabout ) are empty.

Yes of course it’s going to put off the applicants for some courses- the smaller or less prestigious ones that are more likely to struggle. I think that the high profile courses that are at the top of the Uk rankings ( medicine, dentistry, life sciences etc ) will be ok as well as the more niche ones like forensics and the dual qualifying law courses .

But yes it’s shocking news for everyone in the city.

West park halls have been under-occupied all year. I don't think it's a result of current negative news but under occupancy hasn't helped. Parker house is Abertay not Dundee. I think it's cost of living and more students living at home, also cost of managed halls is more than some of the private ones.
It's an almighty mess but we're keeping going and doing the teaching etc. Not much more we can do!

Namedundeeswap · 01/04/2025 12:42

That's not applicable to Scotland?

Bobthecob2 · 01/04/2025 12:44

Yes, it specifically mentions English HE.

GCAcademic · 01/04/2025 15:03

Oh sorry, I forgot OfS only applies to England!

Namedundeeswap · 01/04/2025 15:07

Tis okay, very similar stuff to what the Scottish funding council has in place. This thread is helping us feel supported and seen.

My daughter is hoping to study at Dundee in a couple of years, the course is only done there and in London. I hope they don’t axe it.

Goldusty · 01/04/2025 15:38

Isn't Dundee uni on the OfS register as a provider?

Namedundeeswap · 01/04/2025 19:27

@Goldusty OfS doesn't venture north of the Scottish border.
@BoredZelda something that unique you would hope will be safe. Fingers crossed!

You really couldn't make this up.

Dundee brought to brink of financial ruin. Short term survival only possible because of bail out from Scottish government.

....but one of them gets a new senior management role at Northumbria!!

....oh well - if you want that sort of talent then you must be willing to pay for it!!

Two Dundee University chiefs to leave amid ongoing cash crisis

University chiefs previously said they would be 'out of cash' by the end of June without intervention.

Not surprising in the slightest. The senior management at the university my husband was made redundant from (where there was acknowledged financial mismanagement) have all continued to fail upwards after running away from their own mess.

It's not in the slightest surprising. I left Dundee just over 10 years ago as part of a restructuring process that would "ensure the University's long term stability". It has been very clear that this process was a total failure.

This pair arrived after my departure so don't know them, but many of the same names are still around and still in highly paid admin jobs.

It's almost at the point of the uni exec who were in charge in October having all departed permanently or being on leave. Once these two go, there's only the interim principal left. Wondering how long before he goes too.

Sceptic1234 · 09/04/2025 10:32

Anyone surprised.....??

Can't read article as behind pay wall....

The salaries some of those at the top have been commanding is borderline criminality in any case@Sceptic1234

Looks like the outgoing principal has had a change of mind and will be appearing in front of the Hollyrood committee too...
