How to get high a-level predicted grades

My school has tightened up the predicted grades systems - we used to add one above the mocks if the teachers thought you could improve in a year's time or even 2 (but obv a lot rarer). e.g. you got an A in the Y12 summer mocks you could be predicted A/A or A. This normally worked decently but did not work very well for last yr's graduating class as many underachieved. I've read posts from ppl at other schools who say their schools refuse to predict A unless they consistently achieve A through the yr or get A in the Y12 summer mocks. But given u just started A-Levels how are you meant to achieve Awork consistently in Y12. I don't remember getting grade 9-level essays in until the summer term of Y10 for GCSE. For context I do History, politics, English lit and RS.

As it says at the top of this section, this board is for university staff not school pupils. Better to post in a schools section. (And read the instructions in your exam papers!)

the reason students underachieved last year was because of post covid thresholds sky rocketing and mocks being based on covid era thresholds. Just didn't work out.

All schools will have their own ways of doing this. The only guaranteed way to get high predicted grades is to work really hard though I'm afraid.

This is harsh. The OP is a child who is clearly seeking advice from academics

Well yes but (s)he needs advice from his/her own subject teachers and/or the school UCAS advisor, not random posters on Mumsnet!

If you're still reading OP, the year 12 exams are a likely guide to what you'll get. You need to convince subject teachers you've improved materially since then if you want better predictions.

But she needs advice from teachers. We don't get involved in predicting A level grades.

That's as maybe but she's a child so a slightly kinder tone would be appropriate.

I think the op is a teacher, not a student.

I made no assumptions about your sex.

Glad you got sorted.

I am a retired teacher and I can tell you most students I knew, even the good ones who get A/A in their actual A level exams could work harder. Most had time consuming part time jobs they spend up to 16 hours a week doing. A lot of that time used could be doing more essays and gaining more feedback for improvement. I used to set my A level students two essays most weeks or one essay and one set of questions plus research. I also set them one timed essay a week in class so they got used to writing quickly under pressure. A high percentage of my students got A/A's. I had to work very hard doing all the extra marking though. I was happy to do this. My own DC were grown up so I had the time. Not all teachers will have the time as they will have small DC of their own.
