I am audiologist and aural care specialist. Which means i've see thousands of people in the 8 years ive been in this field. Its my first time on mumsnet. i see a thread asking for specialist advice. i give my advice. KEYWORD: advice (this means you read the responses and use your own discernment. My account gets banned. For what exactly? There was no reason When giving advice around the topic of health, discourse between healthcare professionals is going to happen and thats normal.
What i dont understand is why people in healthcare suddenly have animosity and are just plain rude, its not just on here that ive experienced it but also when i worked in local non private hospitals (national-health-service), its what made me leave the national health in the first place. Terrible customer service and the constant tiptoeing around your colleagues in case they report you for whatever reason, sometimes its as sad as the fact that they just dont even like you. (ive heard this said to me) its actually THAT bad over there. its gross.
I wouldnt wish that sort of environment on a new trainee. Or anyone freshly graduated. If your a new graduate or starting out please, please, please try your hand at a private hospital. and by private im NOT talking specsavers or boots, i am talking harley street and neighbouring hospitals. It will change your perspective and you will be treated well and learn more than just audiology. It will broaden your scope and provide you with ACTUAL opportunities to do more things without you having to be scared of asking and getting rejected or having to earn it somehow. As someone who was once in your shoes some more than 5 years ago. i am proud to say the national health is never seeing me again.
And lastly, I want people to understand if something does not sit right with you, dont let it fester there.
Just because i am an audiologist and specialise in all things ears, does NOT mean that i cant get things wrong. We try to give you as much as we can but at the end of the day if you think otherwise you are more than welcome to request a second opinion or someone else. Thats totally ok. What kind of healthcare professional would it make me if I cant accept my mistakes or take criticism.
i also think, we as women in health need to do better. theres alot of egos in this industry and also bullying behaviour. it needs to be addressed. ive been victim to it in the past as a student. and will never be victim to it again. it might be why my patients pay me £90 per 15 minute sessions now whilst my bullies work making peanuts in these hospitals. rejection is redirection. Stay blessed.
