Hi,
Does anyone work in HE, and if so, what do you do, and would you recommend it? I'm currently working in an administrative role within FE, but looking at other options.
Thanks.

yes, plenty of people here work in universities. I have no idea on the admin side I'm afraid.

can you be more specific on what role you are interested in.

I work in HE but in an academic role so can only really collect on the organisation as a whole. I find it a great place to work, people very open minded and from lots of different backgrounds. The pay is pretty good and good package in terms of holiday pay and other benefits.

I work pt in HE as an academic. It is far from my only job as the pay is pathetic. But I love the work. Of the admin staff I know at our uni half are run off their feet and work all hours. The others seem to do nothing but occasionally cock up and let the busy ones sort out their messes.

I work in admin/ops in HE and tbh it's all going s bit Pete Tong in a lot of HEIs, or will soon enough...tuition fees have been capped for years, costs for new building projects have absolutely skyrocketed and IME, young people's expectations have cha.ged dramatically in terms of type of learning provision - a surprising number of of them expect to have all teaching provided online for their convenience, with them never having to attend timetabled lectures 🙄

I would say pay and benefits have been reasonable for a lot of professional services HE staff for years, but I would expect that to change in a lot of places soon, as leaner management and prof services structures come in and costs continue to need cutting.
