I've just started my PhD and looking for concise ways to do my reading and note taking. I'm not great reading on a laptop but like the idea of note taking on mendeley to be able to store and file my notes efficiently. Can I use a kindle or something similar to read on and note take at the same time?
If mendeley isn't the best way of storing notes, what else could I use? I've thought of a spreadsheet with the ability then to filter notes by theme for future reference. Not sure if I'm over thinking this or if anyone has any suggestions?

GoodNotes on ipad is great for scribbling in the margins but less good for organising files.

Zotero is free & good for organising pdfs and not linked to the evil Elsevier (who own Mendeley).
