Looking to the five years ahead, how worried are you about Uk universities?

I am asking this from the perspective of a parent with one finished uni, one in progress, one starting in September and a fourth applying next year.

Is there any prospect of this government sorting out the key issues - paying academics properly, raising domestic fees to restore the value lost by inflation, dealing with freedom of speech and thought?

My kid 4 is looking at RG unis and McGill in Canada - am I right in thinking Canada is looking like the sensible choice?

If they had done a collection at every graduation ceremony since they started they have more than that. That’s chump change. They are one of the lowest in the country but have been training engineers for years. Hell, James Dyson lives nearby, they could have got that out of him with a couple of lunches and some judicious flattery. They can’t have made any effort to fundraise at ALL.

It's per year. I'd hope if they'd had a collection every year since they started they'd have actually spent it rather than stash in bank.

Dyson has links with Warwick btw so they get his spare change.

There is an interesting article in the Times today about Uk universities slide down the international rankings - behind a firewall though. I don’t know if it really confirms my concerns or whether it is more about Chinese and Indian universities improving and causing displacement that way.

That ranking (if you look at the overall ranking table on the website) also emphasises how some of the universities considered v prestigious in the Uk are viewed abroad - Durham and St Andrews are pretty low down.
