Using the commute better

As I am now going into work a bit more often (and I just have so much work to do), I wondered if anyone had any suggestions (tablets maybe)? for working on the commute? I'd like to link up with office and internet to scan documents, do reviews, maybe use word or excel. Obviously I need mobile data? What about a pen? Does anyone else do this successfully and have any suggestions? Thanks

Do you not have a laptop? What sort of commute do you do? Without mobile data you can draft replies to all your emails and then they’ll send when you plug in at the office.

I mark on my iPad. While I'm at home and in my wifi, I download the essays which students submit electronically in PDFs to my iPad, making sure they're available offline, then I can read & make notes using an Apple Pencil.

I have and LOVE my Microsoft Surface Go. It’s basically an iPad and I have a magnetic keyboard like for the iPad that clips into it. BUT it cheap and because it’s Microsoft you can log into your one drive or university files and read theses or whatever on your commute.

You can get a pen for a surface Go. My university bought mine so I think got a discount, but I got the tablet, keyboard and pen for £650 ish. Perfectly suitable for excel and word.

i use ipad + dropbox + goodnotes - I have a folder on dropbox called 'to review' which has pdfs that I can load up in Goodnotes & comment in the margins with the Apple Pencil. I don't do excel or Word on the ipad if I can help it, but just having some dedicated time to do reading / reviewing all in one place is very helpful.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't want to carry a laptop around with me ideally - I just find them too bulky (and I have quite a small lightweight one). I will look into an ipad or surface pro with a pen I think. Its the reviewing, commenting and marking that I want to do on the commute.

How long is commute, tube, bus or train?

Mine is half hour each way on train. I use Old fashioned paper, print it out at work, for reviews, revisions, and all sorts of items you want to comment on. Read/mark on way home /way back in, write up your summary notes when you get back.

My commute is the only downtime I get from getting up in the morning until 8:30pm when the kids are down and dinner is tidied. At that point, the laptop often comes out, especially in term time. I guard my commute preciously and use it to slack off and clear my head a bit.

The most I do is a bit of email clearing if the inbox is messy (delete spam, send quick one line emails that don't need work) or reading over a lecture on the way in to teach.
